Recap / The Inbetweeners S 1 E 3 Thorpe Park

Go To

Simon is about to take his first driving test, and Will, Jay and Neil are very excited by the new possibilities. As soon as Simon has passed they plan to visit Thorpe Park to ride roller coasters and chase girls. There is one problem though... Simon's car is humiliatingly bright yellow.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Will is mortified to find out that he just insulted a couple of people with Down's Syndrome and doesn't want his friends to know. They find out and they find it hilarious.
  • Calling Shotgun: Simon picks up Will first. Will naturally sits on the front seat, and when they stop to pick up Jay, Simon and Will both get out of the car to greet him. When Will is about to get back to the front seat, Jay instantly calls shotgun. Will has not heard of shotgun before, and it is explained to him, after which Jay and Simon insist he should sit at the backseat. Cue one of Will's usual "unwritten rule I have never about heard before or just don't like" rants.
  • Cringe Comedy: Will's explosive reaction to a group of people getting to go on the front row of a ride in Thorpe Park without queueing. And then realising that they all have severe Down's Syndrome.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: The boys queue for the front-row seats but (apart from Will) lose out at the last minute. Despite being told to by both his friends and the attendant to shut up and sit down, he continues to loudly complain about the "inconsiderate arseholes" who pushed in front. He then sits down next to them, only to find out that he's just insulted two kids with Down's Syndrome. Oops.
  • Disability as an Excuse for Jerkassery: The group of people with intellectual disabilities trash Simon's car simply because Will called them arseholes.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Simon's driving test proctor makes him visibly uncomfortable by touching him inappropriately, and he's implied to only have passed his test because she felt him up, but this is played for laughs.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Will is horrified when he realises he accidentally insulted two boys with Down's syndrome. The others are shocked at first, then start laughing.
  • Going Commando: Neil is naked under his Mr. Monkey costume at Thorpe Park, much to the disgust of the others. Neil counters that Mr. Monkey isn't naked — "he has a vest on!"
  • Guilt by Association Gag: Will accuses three people of pushing in and calls them "inconsiderable arseholes", who then find out that they are disabled. The disabled people get back at Will by vandalising Simon's car.
  • Hidden Depths: You wouldn't expect a ninny like Will to be a roller coaster buff, would you? Though in keeping with character, he gets queasy and frightened when he actually gets around to riding the things.
  • Jerkass: Neil's co-workers at Thorpe Park. We don't see them, but they've stolen Neil's clothes from his locker at least three times, the third occurring in the episode itself, and the last time they stole his clothes, they set them on fire.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: It was pretty inconsiderate of the Down's Syndrome kids to cut in front of Will in a queue he'd been in for hours, then refuse to move. He probably didn't need to call them "arseholes", but he had every right to be annoyed.
  • My God, What Have I Done??: Will finds out that there is only one more room at the front of the Nemesis Inferno. Will furiously accuses the three people of pushing in and calls them "inconsiderable arseholes", only to find out that they are disabled.
Will: (after finding out that he insulted three disabled people) I'm the worst human being in the world.
  • Tempting Fate: Will's narration says he hopes the others won't find out he accidentally insulted two boys with Down's syndrome. Moments later, they do, and even they are shocked.
