Tropes

  • Blatant Lies: Isabella pretends to get texts from Valerie, but Diane knows she can't be getting them from Valerie because she lied about Valerie working for the Obamas.
  • Central Theme: Government censorship.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Kurt gets ahold of Stephen Dinovera at the NSA by calling his own and Diane's voicemail while in the house and leaving a message naming Dinovera, saying he and Diane need to meet, then deleting the voicemail so Diane doesn't get it.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Diane declares that she needs a drink first if she's gonna come clean to Kurt about the hacking.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Lucca quickly excuses herself when she learns that Gary has found Scientology, saying she has to get up soon.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Lucca explains to Gary that in real law, no one ever bursts into your office and says they need you in court. Then Adrian bursts in and says he needs her on the Staples case.
  • Irony: Staples's attorney objects to Diane representing Chumhum since she's represented Staples before. Her side switches to Adrian, who brings up racist statements Staples has made online.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Lucca talks to herself about not being an actor.
  • Meaningful Name: A witness in court calls herself Leather. Her sister is called Lace.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Felix Staples calls Chumhum’s treatment of him “a high-tech lynching of uppity homos.” This echoes Clarence Thomas’s response to Anita Hill’s sexual harassment allegations. [1]
    • As part of his trolling, Felix tells Adrian and Lucca that he thinks R. Kelly is being treated badly.
    • Gary has had his life changed by one L. Ron Hubbard.
  • This Is Reality: Lucca tells herself that court is not a theatre stage, it's reality.
