Recap / The Golden Girls S 04 E 08 Scared Straight

Go To

"Scared Straight" is an episode in the fourth season of The Golden Girls.

Blanche's brother Clayton is afraid to admit his homosexuality, so he claims he slept with Rose.

Tropes:

  • All Gays Love Theatre: Sophia figures out Clayton is gay because he sings in the shower and knows all the words to "Send In The Clowns" from Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music.
  • Cure Your Gays: Played with; Blanche, while talking with Clayton in a restaurant which she assumes is a gay bar (it's actually a sports bar that had the few women in attendance leave), announces to the clientele that she'd be proud to have any one of them date her brother. One of the customers says, "I'd rather date you, lady," to which Blanche crows, "I've done the impossible! I've converted one!"
  • Late Coming Out: Clayton comes out in his fifties after decades of marriage to a woman.
  • Sexual Euphemism: Rose's description of homosexuality, once she realizes Clayton is a gay man.
Rose: Clayton, you're the thing that everyone said Olga Larson's nephew was, because he wore paisley clogs and gave out puff pastries on Halloween.
Clayton: I've been called a lot of things in my time, but that's a first for that one. Yeah, I'm gay, Rose.
  • Straight Gay: Clayton.
