Go To

A Plot: The Yentas and the JTP both take up line dancing. Beverly struggles to keep up with the trend, but she's spurned on by her rivalry with Jane Bales and genuine encouragement from Barry.

B Plot: Encouraged to get out of an emotional funk caused by no longer working on a movie set, Adam tries to get a new job with Pop-Pop's help. He ends up being hired by a 50's-themed diner, but then struggles to balance his time between work and family.

  • Beatnik: The role Adam plays as a waiter in the 50's diner, complete with bongo drums.
  • Coincidental Accidental Disguise: Through a series of events related to her injury, Beverly ends up looking like a stereotypical old lady, with horn-rimmed glasses, a cane, cardigan sweater and gray hair.
  • Critical Staffing Shortage: The main reason why the 50's diner decides to hire Adam is because they're so short-staffed that Johnny Atkins was given a position of authority, which Johnny himself notes is ridiculous.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Beverly absolutely hates when Jane, instead of spurring her on as she usually does, apologizes for her behavior and starts pitying her after Beverly sprains her ankle line dancing. They return to trading barbs at the end of the episode, after Beverly brings baby Muriel line dancing and lets Jane hold her.
  • Elvis Impersonator: Everyone at the 50's diner is required to dress in an era-appropriate costume, with Johnny Atkins dressing and acting like Elvis, and one waitress dressed like Marilyn Munroe but caring so little that she doesn't even remember Marilyn's last name.
  • Feeling Their Age: The A Plot centers around Beverly trying to prove to Jane that she still has enough energy to go toe-to-toe with her despite being a grandmother, but ends up stepping on everyone's toes (including her own) while trying to keep up with their line dancing. By the end, she's regained her groove while also managing her grandmother duties, bringing baby Muriel with her to line dancing to show her off to everyone.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The night that Beverly tries to get her groove back at line dancing, Erica and Geoff need her to babysit Muriel because Lou Schwartz has won an award from the Professional Optometrists Of Philadelphia organization, which has the acronym of POOP.
  • My Hair Came Out Green: While trying to look more "youthful" after her line dancing mishap, Beverly asks a hair stylist to make her hair platinum blonde, but it comes out old lady grey.
  • No, Except Yes: When Pop-Pop apologizes for being a Picky Eater by getting Adam's job back, Pop-Pop admits he's not usually like that but had grown accustomed to Adam's presence and was frustrated by the thought of Adam not reciprocating that feeling. When Adam states that Pop-Pop missed him, Pop-Pop tells him not to put words in his mouth, and then immediately says that's exactly it.
  • Picky Eater: Keeping with the rest of the family's habit for bratty demands, when Pop-Pop tries to spend time with Adam at his new job at the diner, his insufferable demands for things like fresher rolls ends up frustrating Adam and then getting him fired for "poor customer service".
  • The Place: "Rhinestones and Roses" is the name of the new country music club that's responsible for the recent line dancing craze.
  • Toilet Humour: Barry can't resist forcing Geoff to make two jokes about the POOP awards.
