Chapter 44: After the Battle

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • After Action Patch Up: In a sense. The majority of the Madrigal half of the chapter is Hiccup spending the night in Casita and talking with Mirabel about what happened.
  • Big "WHAT?!": This is the entire family's reaction to Dolores and Mariano postponing their wedding. Mariano is fast enough to cover his fiancee's ears.
  • Cluster Bleep-Bomb: A furious Stoick delivers one to Snoutlout and the Twins when he finds out they caused Hiccup's injuries, forcing Astrid, Gobber and Fishlegs to cover their ears. The only part they're able to make out is that Snoutlout's hopes of becoming Village Chief are dashed.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Downplayed. While Hiccup is fairly nonchalant when he says that he believes that the other Vikings want to kill him, the rest of the family is utterly horrified.
  • Dig Your Own Grave: When Stoick found out that it was Snotlout and the Twins that beat Hiccup, he has them dig shallow graves and make them lie in them for the duration of their stay there.
  • Freudian Slip: After Mirabel comments about most Viking names being awful, Hiccup makes a joke about them naming their child "Fartmuncher". Mirabel laughs, then asks if Hiccup is saying that he wants to have kids with her. He's incredibly embarrassed, and tries to make excuses before she laughs it off.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: While Stoick at first thought that the Madrigals were the ones who hurt Hiccup, Tuffnut thoughtlessly confesses on his, Ruffnut and Snotlout's behalf.
Snotlout: What is wrong with you!? Why'd you tell him all that!?
Tuffnut: Because I believe in crediting artists for their work!
  • Violence is the Only Option: Astrid believes in skipping diplomacy and goes straight to threats to get Hiccup to come back. Fishlegs rightfully points out that this is a Missing Steps Plan considering how grossly outnumbered they are.
