Chapter 42: Washed Up

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Culture Clash: Stoick feels enormous compared to the locals, the lack of Horns of Barbarism is brought up more than once and they immediately take note of the lack of torches or weapons of any kind, thinking that they are either stupid or too well-secluded to need any.
  • Exact Words: When Fishlegs asks the local kids where he can find Hiccup, one of them tells him that Hiccup lives at the forge. While Hiccup does live and work in the forge, that wasn't where he was at that moment.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: In a typical moment of Viking machismo, Stoick planned on scaling an unscalable mountain just to prove how determined he was to find his son... before Astrid finds a less perilous path through it. Stoick is, of course, disappointed in the missed opportunity.
  • Missed Him by That Much: When searching the Encanto for Hiccup, Stoick's group unknowingly have several near misses with him.
  • Tempting Fate: When the Vikings find the Madrigal mural, Stoick sees Camilo on it and is instantly reminded of the twins. He decides that the three must never meet. Guess what happens later?
  • Wilting Odor: Gobber's sweating from Encanto's tropical climate nearly causes the twins to pass-out from the B.O.
  • Wrong Assumption: Having come from an Ax-Crazy culture, Stoick assumes that if the citizens of the Encanto know who Hiccup was, they would immediately hold him hostage and try to ransom him.
