Chapter 33: Teatime with Toothless
Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:
- Animal Lover: Antonio has formed a fairly close bond with Toothless (possibly because he's the only human who can understand Toothless' speech).
- Children Are Innocent: Toothless, while talking about an old rival of his, is about to use a certain word to describe him when he remembers that he's talking to a child and immediately censors himself.
- Continuity Nod: In this chapter, Mirabel is teaching Hiccup how to read Spanish, like she promised in the last chapter.
- Mundane Made Awesome: Hiccup learning how to read simple Spanish words (such as "cat") is treated like a big, dramatic accomplishment, with Mirabel shouting encouragement while he sweats from the effort. Toothless lampshades this when he calls what they're doing stupid.
- Mythology Gag: One of the stories Toothless tells Antonio involves a hostile Whispering Death he had a run in with.
- Orphaned Punchline: Toothless was apparently telling a joke to Antonio while Mirabel was teaching Hiccup their alphabet.Toothless: And that, is why you should never interrupt a Monstrous Nightmare mating dance!
- Tempting Fate: Toothless assures Antonio that he will "never have to deal with" the Red Death. Never ever. Ever.
