Recap / The Croods: Family Tree S1E3 "Game Nightmares"

Go To

The Bettermans invite the Croods into their annual game night, only for Grug and Phil to act out their competetive ways.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Actually Not a Vampire: Gran thinks that the Bettermans are secretly Wereacudas — "half-man, half-bear, half-fish beasts" — and that this is why they are acting so suspicious, when really they were just preparing for game night. She continues to think her theory despite evidence to the contrary.
  • Boring, but Practical: When the Croods stalk the Bettermans, they scale the tree along the sides of its bark. Thunk just takes the elevator.
  • Cutting the Knot: Eep's answer to Grug and Phil's growing competitive streak is to club Phil over the head with the "Timeout Club" and call it a night. Guy manages to talk her out of it, or at least Moving the Goalposts.
  • Graceful in Their Element: While Phil is utterly hopeless at surviving alone in the wilderness, Grug thrives in it.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Phil is so committed to winning, that he has openly admitted that it's more important to him than his own daughter and he invented a game for Dawn's fourth birthday just so that he can beat her at it.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Both Grug and Eep use the phrase "now you're talking my talk words."
  • Sore Loser:
    • Since Phil has internalized the idea that "Winning is Everything", whenever he loses at something he will either reach the Despair Event Horizon and neglect everything around him for weeks. Either that or he'll logic his way into being the winner anyway.
    • Grug is so stubborn that he refuses to stop until he wins one game against Phil.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Phil tends to be a "bad sport" whenever he wins at something (which is everything).
    Phil: Winning is everything!
