Recap / The Batman S 1 E 9 The Big Dummy

Go To

A new crime boss shows up: Scarface, a ventriloquist dummy with mild-manned Arnold Wesker as his human. Wesker only wants to stage a heist to retire to a farm, but Scarface wants to keep committing crimes. Batman has to stop them, while Alfred signs up Bruce Wayne for a dating site.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Affably Evil: If he didn't take orders from his criminal dummy, Arnold Wesker would be a generic Nice Guy with glasses.
  • Birds of a Feather: Bruce's online date, Becky, appears to share several interests with him, prompting Alfred to comment on how he's finally found someone he can relate to.
  • Broken Tears: Wesker cries after he sees Scarface torn to pieces.
  • Dating Service Disaster: How Bruce's brief foray into online dating works out from Becky's end. She meets and chats with a nice guy online and agrees to meet him in person, only for someone else to show up and tell her he's not coming. The way she resignedly asks if he's married implies this isn't the first time this has happened to her. At least Bruce was just Married to the Job.
  • Downer Ending: Scarface "dies," leaving Wesker bereft. Bruce decides that he can't see or date Becky, and Alfred delivers an apology in person.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Wesker tries to sever ties with Scarface when the latter reneges on his promise.
  • Gold Digger: Bruce warns Alfred not to post his picture or annual income on the dating site, implicitly because he's wary of this trope.
  • I Lied: Scarface never intended to retire with the money from his heist.
  • It's Not You, It's Me: Bruce genuinely seems to hit it off with Becky during their online chat, but ultimately decides that his work as Batman would get in the way of the relationship and breaks things off before it can go any further. While it's shown that this isn't fair to Becky, Bruce points out when deciding to give up the relationship that it would also be unfair to date her while keeping a huge secret like his double life from her.
  • Married to the Job: Alfred tells Becky that Bruce is married to his work.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: Bruce hits it off with Becky online, but breaks up with her before anything really comes of it because he acknowledges that his secret identity will interfere with any attempt he makes to have a serious relationship.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Becky thought she was going to met a nice guy with whom she'd hit it off online for a coffee date. Instead she gets a butler twice her age who regretfully informs her that she's being stood up.
