Recap / The Americans S4E13 - Persona Non Grata

Go To

After hearing about William, Stan and Aderholt stake out his apartment, and arrest him before he can meet with Philip. However, William already has the virus, and infects himself with it. William is taken to a bio-containment unit, and while he slowly but painfully dies of the virus, Stan and Aderholt try to question him, but while William does talk about his life, he doesn't give Philip or Elizabeth up. Gabriel meets up with Elizabeth and Philip to tell them William has likely been arrested, and suggests they quit and flee the country, which they ponder. Because of this incident, as well as the death of Gaad, Arkady gets expelled by the U.S. from the Rezidentura, and Tatiana has to stay in place to lead it until someone new takes her place (meaning she's no longer being posted to Kenya), and Oleg decides to go home.

Mischa (Alex Ozerov), Philip's other son from Irina, manages to avoid jail for protesting the Afghan War, and decides to head to America to find Philip.

Elsewhere, Alice has her baby, and Matthew and Paige continue their relationship.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Philip, speaking at an EST meeting, talks about how much he hates his job (he claims to be talking about the travel agency, but of course, he's talking about being a spy), the head of EST asks him, "So why don't you quit?"
  • Black Comedy: As William lays dying, Aderholt asks him, "Would you like a Coke?", which William scoffs at.
  • Body Horror: As William had forecasted, when he injects himself with the virus, his organs start to decay rapidly, and it is not a pretty sight.
  • Call-Back: Elizabeth tells Philip she talked to Paige about her childhood in Smolensk.
  • Cassandra Truth: Averted; when William tells the FBI agents who have surrounded him that he's injected himself with the virus, Stan immediately knows to take him seriously, orders everyone to stay clear of him, and orders a biomed unit to come immediately.
  • Married to the Job: While on his deathbed, William mentions the woman who posed at his wife left him eventually because they argued so much about how much he worked at his job.
  • Parents Walk In at the Worst Time: Discussed - when Philip goes to Stan's house to pick up Paige, Stan tells Philip he walked in on Matthew and Paige making out (when Philip walks into the room where it happened, Matthew and Paige are sitting on opposite ends of the couch). Unlike most other parents, Stan doesn't seem to mind too much.
  • Persona Non Grata: Arkady is expelled from the Rezidentura, ostensibly for what William was trying to do, but as far as Wolfe is concerned, it's for Gaad getting killed. While Arkady denies knowing anything about William, he can't bring himself to deny that charge.
  • Put on a Bus: This is Arkady's last appearance in the show until Season 6.
  • Shout-Out: Leonard Cohen's "Who by Fire" plays while Paige is holding Alice's new baby.
