Recap / The Americans S4E12 - A Roy Rogers in Franconia

Go To

Paige is still freaked out by the way Elizabeth dispatched the muggers who were trying to attack them, and isn't reassured when Philip goes out to meet William, or by Elizabeth's assurance she's only ever killed someone in self-defense. Paige stays home from school, and Elizabeth admits she grew up in in a war-ravaged area, where you had to be tough to survive. While this is all going on, Paige gets closer to Matthew, to the point she tells her parents about Stan not being in the house the past couple of days (they tell her she doesn't have to do that), while also being frustrated over having to keep up meeting with Pastor Tim.

Philip meets with William, and tells him to go ahead and get the Lassa virus strain, which William refuses to do at first, until Philip comes back to tell him the Centre has ordered him to do it. At the same time, when Tatiana offers Oleg a job working for her in Kenya, she lets slip an operation involving biological weapons, and Oleg relays this information to Stan. Stan convinces Wolfe (Peter Jacobson), his new boss at the FBI, the seriousness of the situation, and they eventually manage to find information on William.

Elsewhere, Aderholt also finds out the Mail Robot has been bugged by the KGB.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Back Story: Elizabeth tells Paige a little about Smolensk, where she grew up, and how war-ravaged it was, but also (she claims) how people worked together.
  • Call-Back: Matthew tells Paige about his father trying to track down Martha (though he doesn't mention her by name).
    • Oleg talks to Tatiana about his brother's death, and how that's affected his family.
    • Paige and Matthew reminisce about Matthew's band, which Matthew admits wasn't very good.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Neither Oleg nor William want the Lassa virus to get out and be used as a weapon.
  • First Kiss: Paige shares this with Matthew.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Though Stan had complained about Wolfe, his new boss, before, when Wolfe hears Stan's news about what Oleg told him, Wolfe immediately makes it a top priority.
  • Shout-Out: Henry and Philip are playing Defender when Elizabeth and Paige get home from church.
    • Elizabeth and Paige are shown watching General Hospital at one point, and trying to follow what's going on.
