Recap / Superstore S 5 E 20

Go To

As Amy takes a day off to have lunch with Jonah's family and Dina has an in-store lunch with new fling Brian, Garrett rallies the employees to play a game of "customer safari" wherein they take pictures of the weirdest customers to earn points. Acting manager Glenn knows something is going on, but is clueless to stop it, so Dina enlists Brian to help her expose the game. At their lunch, Amy urges Jonah to stand up to his condescending brother, Josh, which leads to Jonah's parents splitting while Josh's girlfriend leaves him. When Amy returns to work, she gets a phone call and learns that Maya recommended her for a corporate director position in Palo Alto, California.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Jonah's dad refers to Tiffany Haddish as "Tiffany Hasheesh."
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: Josh makes fun of Jonah for saying that he wanted to marry the family dog when he was seven. Despite Jonah being too young to really understand what that meant, Josh and his girlfriend are disgusted at the idea.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Amy getting offered a corporate job of Director of Customer Experiences, leaving it ambiguous whether she accepts it or not.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Dina's excuse for leaving her date is that she left her felt tips uncapped in the security office and needs to recap them before they dry out — a Continuity Nod to an earlier episode in which all her pens get uncapped and she freaks out.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: Jonah's parents brush off his brother's hurtful teasing by referring to him as their "little comedian."
  • Prisoner's Dilemma: Glenn tries to invoke this to find out what the Cloud 9 staff is doing, telling Sandra that she should confess because Garrett already ratted her out. Sandra doesn't believe this because she's been talking to Glenn with Garrett the entire time. Glenn subsequently tries to get each of them alone, but it doesn't work.
