Recap / SPY×FAMILY - Manga: Interview Arc

Go To

Loid begins making preparations in order to accomplish Operation Strix, starting by getting Anya enrolled in Eden Academy.

Tropes present in Interview Arc:

  • Bad "Bad Acting": All the WISE Staff (and Yor) fall into this to entertain Anya in celebration of her passing the interview.
  • Becoming the Mask: After Swan insults the memory of Anya's mother, Yor goes full "Thorn Princess" mode to defend Anya and would have hit Swan if Loid didn't beat her to it.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Yor and Loid bring three pairs of suits in case of unforeseen circumstances, freaking out Henry.
  • Fat Bastard: Murdoch Swan. He's a tubby professor who sadistically takes out his frustrations with his recent divorce by being petty and demeaning to comparatively happy families.
  • Kick the Dog: Murdoch Swan specializes in this by insulting a boy during his interview and goading Anya into tearfully remembering her real mother. Fortunately, Henry doesn't approve.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Swan gets punched out by Henry after going too far in their interviews, not caring if he gets demoted as punishment.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Despite Loid being extremely serious in this arc (and subsequent arcs) to ensure Anya remains in Eden, he is willing to look for other schools if Eden's teachers continue their harsh behavior on children like Anya.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Swan's pushing of Anya's Trauma Button enrages both Loid and Yor. Loid snaps first, but he manages to redirect his punch to the table just in time.
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: WISE's director is horrified after seeing the check come for Loid's renting a castle and his performance in celebration of Anya's success and asks if it's real. His secretary has none of it, bluntly telling him it's real.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Loid's reaction to a drunk Yor nearly fighting him to a standstill? Why was Yor using physical attacks when she was assigned the role of "witch".
