Recap / Sonic Prime S1E4 "Unwelcome to the Jungle"

Go To

After being sucked in through the red Paradox Shard, Sonic ends up falling into a new world completely covered with foliage, Boscage Maze. Here, he meets some of his friends who live as scavengers desperately trying to survive in a world where the plants are threatening to consume everything and encounters another friend who's far more fierce and different from the one he's familiar with.

Tropes:

  • Actually, That's My Assistant: After tricking Birdie into knocking herself out, Sonic tells the Scavengers it's safe to come down since he had defeated the "monster"...only for them to inform him that he had only fought the monster's pet.
  • Blatant Lies: Prim Rouge has no idea about the Paradox Prism shard that Sonic is trying to find, but she pretends to help Sonic in exchange for finding more food.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Thorn Rose claiming the Prism shard for herself and about to attack Sonic.
  • Déjà Vu: A new world's version of his friends don't recognize him and its Amy attacks him without hesitation.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Sonic tries to outrun the monster (or rather, its pet), but the jungle floor is so thick with plants that he can't build up his speed, forcing him to stand and fight.
  • Foreshadowing: During the scavengers' foraging, Gnarly is shown tearing away some vines with such violence that Sonic tells him to take it easy, hinting at the real reason they came into conflict with Thorn.
  • Here We Go Again!: Sonic is annoyed that he has entered a new world where different versions of his friends don't recognize him at all. This time, Big is an agitated dweller named Hangry while Tails is a more savage Wild Child named Mangy.
  • Irony: Thorn is the only one whose species isn’t a carnivore yet she’s the one who's considered a monster. Plus, her species eats plants, yet she’s not one of the scavengers.
  • My Name Is Inigo Montoya/Prepare to Die: "My name is Thorn Rose. And you are finished!"
  • Mythology Gag: Sonic is hit into a field of thorny vines, and a familiar sound from the games is heard as if Sonic fell onto some metal spikes.
    Sonic: Spikes! I hate spikes!
  • Punny Names: The jungle world's Big is named Hangry because he's frustrated at being so hungry. Meanwhile, this Tails is named Mangy for being so...mangy.
  • We Used to Be Friends: The reason why Thorn Rose has been driving out Prim Rouge and the others, despite them having been friends in the past, is because they had a habit of taking more resources than needed and nearly brought the jungle to ruin.
  • Would Not Hit a Girl: Sonic can't bring himself to hurt Thorn Rose, mostly because she reminds him of his Amy. Too bad she doesn't share the same sentiment.
  • Wolverine Claws: Sonic's gear changes once he enters the Boscage Maze, now allowing him to project energy claws on his hands and feet.
