Recap / Samurai Rabbit The Usagi Chronicles S 1 E 1 The Big City

Go To

Young Yuichi Usagi dreams of becoming a samurai like his famous ancestor Miyamoto Usagi. To that end, he leaves his auntie's farm behind to find adventure in the city of Neo Edo. However, upon arriving he finds that his ancestor is remembered as a villain and as Miyamoto's descendant, Yuichi isn't looked upon fondly either.

Tropes:

  • Acting Out a Daydream: Yuichi starts to become so engrossed in his fantasy, he starts wildly swinging his sword around with closed eyes. While driving a steamcycle through a bustling city. Later on he starts narrating yet another Imagine Spot, only for Gen to call him out for being insulting, revealing that Yuichi said his narration out loud.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Yuichi tells his auntie he's made up his mind about leaving for Neo Edo, she pulls Edgewing on him. Yuichi nervously says he didn't think she'd be that mad about it, only for his auntie to agree that she can't stop him and give him her old weapon so he'll have an easier time finding a sensei in Neo Edo.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: Kitsune calls the Mogura the third most dangerous gang in Neo Edo. Chikabuma's not amused.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: When Yuichi narrates his Imagine Spot, Gen takes offense to Yuichi's rather unflattering description of him. Yuichi is embarrassed that he actually narrated out loud.
  • Establishing Character Moment: After gushing to his pet Spot about his famous ancestor Miyamoto, Usagi proceeds to practice some moves on his auntie's farmbotto, only to accidentally activate it and lay waste to the farm. This gives us basically all we need to know about Yuichi in a few scenes. He's Miyamoto's descendant, he admires and wants to be like his ancestor and he's often reckless.
  • Gilligan Cut: Yuichi promises his auntie that he'll treat Edgewing with respect and that he'll find himself a sensei as soon as he reaches Neo Edo. The very next scene he's swinging Edgewing around like a toy, while loudly declaring that he'll never get a sensei, because he already knows everything.
  • Heroic Wannabe: Yuichi's eagerness to be a heroic samurai causes him to rush into situations without assessing them first. Because of this, Yuichi ends up hurting people more than he helps.
  • Identical Grandson: Aside from the slightly more youthful features, Yuichi is the spitting image of his ancestor Miyamoto. Kagehito actually thinks Yuichi is Miyamoto upon seeing him and continues to believe that even when Yuichi immediately corrects him.
  • Idiot Ball: After already having been told that his presence somehow causes the Ki-Stone to act up, Yuichi still decides it would be a good idea to go and take a closer look at the artifact. Preditably, this goes horribly wrong.
  • Imagine Spot: While driving through Neo Edo, Yuichi fantasizes about first slaying a group of thugs, then being granted the power of the Ki-Stone to battle yokai. He has another when he confronts Gen to protect the "innocent" pig Gen is threatening, in which he imagines himself in traditional samurai garb and the alley as part of an old-edo style village.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Honestly, it would be more challenging to find a moment in the episode where Yuichi doesn't mess up. Highlights include:
    • Letting a notorious thief get away, ruining the efforts of the bounty hunter who tracked him down.
    • Landing on Kitsune's puppet theatre and kidnapping her puppet in the process.
    • Jumping out of a manhole with so much force, he ends up completely destroying a bunch of priceless vases.
    • And breaking the Ki-Stone, causing dozens of dangerous yokai to be released.
  • Retired Badass: Implied with Yuichi's auntie. She's a humble farmer in the present, but owns a named sword (Edgewing), is surprisingly acrobatic for an old lady, has a wooden ear and a prosthetic leg and used to teach the skilled Yuichi. All of which hints at a very tumultuous past.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gen calls Yuichi out on just assuming that Warimachi was an innocent pig while Gen himself was a brutish thug, just because they look cute and intimidating respectively.
