Tropes

  • Badass Bystander: A passenger in the taxi Syed drives under a pseudonym recognises Syed's picture and tries to apprehend him. The fracas buys enough time for 20 Squad to arrive.
  • Child Soldiers: In Somalia, Syed's army was comprised of children whose parents he'd either killed or forced them to kill.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Deeply subverted: Syed refuses to read a confession of his war crimes even to save his wife and son.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Joseph, the leader of the child soldiers, starts adopting the cruelty and brutality Syed inflicted on him in his pursuit of revenge.
  • Irony: After Syed's family are saved, they - having learned his true nature, from Joseph's gang - publicly disown him on the way to his trial, which actually dejects him for once. Meaning that the gang, while failing to kill them, still managed to hurt him through them.
  • It's Personal: Several of Syed's former child soldiers abduct his wife and son, threatening to kill them both unless he reads a live confession of his war crimes.
  • Red Baron: Aden Syed, aka The Saw Man
  • Unishment: How the former Somali child soldiers regard Syed being sent to stand trial in the Hague.
Joseph: They're sending him to Europe, where he'll get three hot meals, a soft bed and an army of lawyers to defend him? How is that justice?!
  • War Is Hell: Hondo recalls having seen some of the atrocities committed by Syed during his time with the Marines in Somalia.
  • Wham Shot: Street killing two criminals trying to rob the bar where his half brother works in cold blood.
