Jane's dad shows up and reveals that he's getting married, but Angela refuses to sign the annulment paperwork he's seeking. Meanwhile, a dead yoga student leads to Maura and Jane being trapped in a sinking car and repairing their relationship as they wait for help.

- Everyone Knows Morse: That Maura, Jane and Korsak all know Morse code saves Maura and Jane's lives. Trapped in a submerging car with a damaged mobile phone that can text symbols, Jane uses dots and dashes to text their coordinates (which Maura can recite) in Morse to Korsak.
- Informed Self-Diagnosis: Maura accurately diagnoses what is wrong with her injured leg note and then talks Jane through what she has to do in order to relieve the pressure so she won't lose the leg.
- Life-or-Limb Decision: Maura's leg gets badly injured after she and Jane are in a car accident in "Dirty Little Secret". Jane is then told that she'll have to cut Maura's leg open to reestablish blood flow and minimize clotting in a major artery. Jane doesn't want to risk further injuring or possibly killing her friend, but Maura informs her that she'll lose her leg for certain due to compartment syndrome if Jane doesn't at least try. Thankfully, Jane makes the life/limb(and ultimately, relationship)-saving incision with no complications suffered.
- Rising Water, Rising Tension: Jane and Maura are trapped in a wrecked car that is slowly being submerged as the water rises around them. Ironically, this lowers the personal tension that's been building between Jane and Maura for the past two episodes.
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Maura still hasn't forgiven Jane for having to shoot her mobster father last season and Jane's fed up with Maura's attitude. So naturally they end up having to investigate a potential lead together and snark at each other even more than they usually do the entire way there.
- Trapped in a Sinking Car: Jane and Maura are trapped in a wrecked car that is slowly being submerged as the water rises around them.
- Vomit Chain Reaction: Tommy's vomiting (after a floater is pulled out of the river) sets off Frost.
