A journalism student is found dead on a beach from an apparent drowning, but her lungs contain freshwater instead of the expected saltwater. The trail leads back to a drug ring operating out of a local university, causing Jane to reconnect with her former partner. Elsewhere, Maura learns that Hope has received a sizeable donation from Paddy Doyle and is now being investigated by the FBI.
Tropes in the Episode
- Actor Allusion: Detective Vince Korsak comments that Psi Beta Tau sorority girls, just like in his day, were "foxy, smart." Rizzoli points out that Korsak never attended college, and he replies "I went to a lot of toga parties." Bruce McGill (who plays Korsak) also played Daniel Simpson Day ("D-Day") in Animal House which had one of the most famous toga party movie-scenes of all time.
- Dirty Cop: The killer turns out to be trooper who was selling drugs on campus and committed the murder to hide the fact.
- The Informant: The victim of the week is revealed to be a CI for the new Drug Unit head. We also see a flashback to the death of Jane and Martinez's informant which is the source of their present day tension.
- Intrepid Reporter: The Victim of the week was still a journalism student but she was carefully investigating a story.
- Killer Cop: A state trooper murdered a student for trying to bust his drug trafficking at her college.
