Recap / Princess Tutu Marionette

Go To

Once upon a time, there was a princess who was held captive.
She was imprisoned in the demon king's castle, her freedom taken from her.
The princess had no choice but to dance like a puppet to the tune set by the whims of her sadistic captor.
One day a hero came to fight the demon king, seeking to save the princess.
However, there was no way the hero could attain the victory.
For you see, the hero did not know that he himself was a puppet that the demon king had created...

  • Character Development:
    • Fakir's I Hate Past Me attitude apparently testifies how little he cares to return to who he was in the previous season: a cold, frustrated young man who possessively clung to whatever control he had in his reach. He's come so far, and he wants to fight for the people he loves rather than bury his own feelings for them.
    • Likewise, Duck/Princess Tutu has come to appreciate how people have their own feelings and style of dancing (which represents their individuality) and wants to become more than Drosselmeyer's puppet.
  • Double-Meaning Title: Princess Tutu may seem like the titular "Marionette", as the story is about how she's a pawn in Drosselmeyer's plot for a tragic ending, fighting for her own destiny. But the title also applies to Fakir (who is trying to move past his former self) and Kraehe (who's been a servant to the Raven for as long as she can remember).
  • Foreshadowing: When Mytho is telling off Kraehe that no one could ever love the daughter of a monster Raven, he's seen scratching himself as though itchy. This foreshadows that he's growing feathers, as the Raven's blood is turning him into a Raven creature.
  • Kick the Dog: Under the influence of the Raven's blood, Mytho casually tells Kraehe that nobody could ever love her for being the daughter of the Raven. This deeply hurts Kraehe.
  • The Reveal: As Kraehe learns from a flashback, she's not the daughter of the Raven. She was the daughter of two human parents whose baby was stolen by ravens.
  • Spanner in the Works: Uzura proves to be one by turning back the hands of time and allowing Kraehe to see her past. This leads to her learning she's really a human, causing her to turn back into Rue and start her path to redemption.
  • Symbolism: As she tries to deal with the sobering truth that her "father" abducted her from her real, human parents, Princess Kraehe gradually changes back into Rue (for good, this time). This signifies Rue's Heel–Face Turn, now that she knows she's human.
  • Wham Shot: Shortly after learning of her human origins, Rue hears Mytho close by and is mortified to see he's become an anthropomorphic raven.
