Recap / Pokemon S 25 E 8 Out Of Their Elements

Go To

Ash and Goh invite Chloe and Eevee along to visit a nearby circus in Vermillion City when the former win a raffle, particularly so Chloe can witness a team of trapeze artists featuring a Flareon and a Jolteon. But as soon as they arrive, things don't go as planned. Said trapeze artists, Harmony and Billy, are intense rivals with an intense love of Fire and Electric types respectively, and they haven't evolved their Eevee yet. But just as they are about to, they drop their stones on the wrong ones! Stuck with Eeveelutions they didn't want, the two's bickering has gotten worse than ever! Now it's up to our heroes to help them realize how to work together.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Chekhov's Gun: Harmony and Billy carry a backup Fire and Thunder Stone respectively, which they try (and fail) to use when they evolve their Eevee into the wrong types. Those same stones are given to Chloe as a gift for helping them out.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Harmony and Billy specialize in Fire and Electric types, but they find themselves utterly out of their element when they accidentally evolve their Eevee into the wrong types. It works on Toril and Bernese as well, as neither of them know the other's routine. Failing to adjust to the old act with their new types or retrain themselves to work with the new act, both Eeveelutions come up with their own act with Ash, Goh, and Chloe's help.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Harmony and Billy can't stand each other over their preference of Pokemon types, but thanks to Ash, Goh, and Chloe, they wind up working together.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While Harmony and Billy do love their Eevee, they start becoming more distant with them without meaning to after they accidentally evolve them into the wrong types. Both become so crushed when it appears they ruined their planned performance and their act is canceled, so they try combining their skills to make something new. In the process, the special training helps their trainers realize what jerks they've been.
  • It Only Works Once: In-Universe, both Harmony and Billy try to re-evolve their Eeveelutions when they accidentally wind up as the wrong types, using a backup Fire and Thunder Stone. Since the mechanics of the Pokemon world dictate that evolution is a permanent, one-time deal that cannot be reversed, their efforts fail.
  • Meaningful Name: Bernese and Toril have names that sound like "Burn" and "Thor" to homage their trainers' respective type preferences. It becomes an Ironic Name when they wind up evolving into a Jolteon and a Flareon, the exact opposite of what their trainers intended.
  • Never My Fault: Both Harmony and Billy blame each other for messing up their Eevee evolutions into the wrong ones from what they intended and getting their acts messed up in the process. They snap out of it when they see Toril and Bernese working together.
  • Oh, Crap!: Harmony and Billy have this reaction when they trip and drop their stones on the wrong Eevee, resulting in the two evolving opposite of what their trainers intended.
  • Playing with Fire: Harmony's specialty is Fire types, and she owns a Torchic, a Darumaka, and a Litleo. She was planning on evolving Bernese into Flareon, but she evolves into Jolteon by mistake.
  • Shock and Awe: Billy specializes in Electric types, and he has a Shinx, Helioptile, and Elekid on his team. Toril was supposed to become a Jolteon, but he winds up as a Flareon by accident.
