Recap / Pokemon S 24 E 42 Showdown At The Gates Of Warp

Go To

Time is running out! With Dialga and Palkia's fighting threatening to turn Pokemon back into eggs and age the entire human population back into infants, Ash, Goh, Chloe, and Dawn must team up with their alternate counterparts to stop Team Rocket's dastardly schemes.

The episode contains the following tropes:

  • Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome:
    • Alt!Chloe is far more confident of herself, and is a skilled computer hacker to boot.
    • Alt!Goh happens to be a genius level inventor, who was able to reverse-engineer the technology used by Team Rocket to protect themselves from the reversal of time.
  • Alternate Self: Professor Rowan's counterpart is introduced in this episode, distinguished by his darker coat. An alternate version of Ash's Infernape, one whom Ash kept with him on his journey rather than leaving it at Oak's lab, is also featured here.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Alt!Ash is a crybaby who's more prone to giving up easily, similar to the Mirror!Ash from X and Y.
  • Call-Back:
    • This isn't the first time Ash has met an alternate version of himself who's a big crybaby; he crossed paths with one such iteration back doing the X and Y era, although this Ash is understandably more devastated over the fact his Pikachu has been devolved back into an egg.
    • Ash finally gets a Haunter like the one he briefly traveled with during the Indigo League era, although it's not that same Haunter. Rather, his poor Gengar ends up being devolved into one.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Even compared to the fact they're far more competent than their mainstream versions, the other Team Rocket vastly underestimated how powerful and angry the Legendary Duo of Sinnoh would get when pushed far enough. Sure enough, the fighting between Dialga and Palkia causes such a devastating effect that it short circuits the armor Team Rocket was using to protect themselves from said effects, causing them to age down to teenagers.
  • Divine Intervention: The populations of two worlds pray to Arceus to free Dialga and Palkia, which it does with little effort. Perhaps not to get on their creator's bad side, the two stop fighting and undo the damage they wrought.
  • Fountain of Youth: Even compared to the last episode, the effects of Dialga and Palkia's fighting are much deadlier than before. Not only do Pokemon age back into eggs much more quickly, humans are starting to be affected as well. Ash, Goh, Chloe, and Dawn, along with their alternate counterparts, wind up as toddlers thanks to the Legendary Duo, and would have ended up as babies had Arceus not intervened.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Even in this other universe, Ash still has Pikachu, he caught an Infernape along his journey, Goh managed to get Aerodactyl and Flygon, and Chloe still got an Eevee that can mimic any Pokemon's moves perfectly.
  • The Reveal: The Alternate Team Rocket was using the fighting between Dialga and Palkia to reduce the entire Pokemon population into eggs. That way, they could not only steal them easily, but they could raise them all to become their new partners without issue.
  • Status Quo Is God: Dialga and Palkia restore the universe to the way it was before they started fighting, including sending everyone back home to their own dimension and restoring everyone to their proper ages.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Alt!Chloe deduced that the best way to destroy Team Rocket's time protection equipment is with plain water.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Alt!Team Rocket is last seen getting flung through a portal back to their headquarters, never to be seen again.
