Ash and Goh encounters a Piplup that swam all the way from the Sinnoh region. After returning the Pokémon to its trainer, Lauren, they learn that Piplup has a rivalry with a Croagunk she recently added to her team. This leads to both Pokémon competing against each other in the Sinnoh region's Pokémon Iceberg Race for the affection of their trainer.
- Blind Without 'Em: Lauren constantly gets into this situation, so Piplup and Croagunk frequently have to fetch her glasses.
- Determinator: Piplup somehow swam from Snowpoint City to Vermillion City on its own, and after a break to refuel is still raring to train.
- Did I Mention It's Christmas?: There are lots of Christmas decorations (including a tree) — which are completely incidental to the plot, with nobody saying anything about Christmas.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Piplup has become jealous of Croagunk due to getting all the attention it used to get. Both of them are about to go through it at the very end.
- Here We Go Again!: At the end, after Piplup and Croagunk have become friends, Lauren finds a Psyduck...
- Karmic Jackpot: Mantyke pretty much throws the entire race just to rescue Pikachu from drowning. This means they are so far behind the pack that they avoid getting captured by Team Rocket, allowing them to save the day.
