After hearing of sightings of the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh, Ash and Goh head for Ecruteak City in Johto. There they meet Chad, a boy who believes that Ho-Oh exists despite his grandfather's unsuccessful search for the Pokémon.
- Continuity Nod:
- Ash recounts his first sighting of Ho-Oh in the very first episode.
- The Tin Tower (now known as the Bell Tower) still has the plaque of Ho-Oh.
- Jaye's Hoothoot being elderly without having evolved into Noctowl is similar to Tree's A Crowd in Hoenn which had an elderly Treecko who never evolved either.
- Gave Up Too Soon: Ash, Goh, and Chad leave just a few seconds before Ho-Oh finally decides to show his face.
- Retcon: Just the like the Johto remake games, the Tin Tower is now referred as the Bell Tower in this episode. It's more noticeable here since it's still the same anime continuity and not an alternate universe.
