Clemont has fond memories of Coumarine City, where he once went to school, and befriended a Shinx, which he nursed back to health. Fate separated them, and now that Shinx has evolved into a Luxio. Clemont fears Luxio never forgave him for the circumstances of their separation. But Clemont must overcome that as Team Rocket once more threatens the twerps—and, this time, Luxio.
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Call Reception Area: Clemont asks Luxio to meet him where they used to meet if he wanted to join his party.
- Forgiveness: Luxio believes that Clemont abandoned him when he was still a little Shinx. Upon seeing Clemont again, Luxio is aggressive towards him. However, after Clemont saves him from Team Rocket and Luxio realizes that Clemont never meant to abandon him, Luxio forgives Clemont and decides to travel with him as his Pokémon.
- Remember the New Guy?: The Luxio was a playmate of Clemont's when he was at a school, back before he evolved from a Shinx.
- Taking the Bullet: Clemont took a Shadow Ball to the back from Pumpkaboo to protect Luxio in his battle with Team Rocket.
- Teacher/Student Romance: The girl Bonnie tries to hook her brother up with happens to be Clemont's former teacher.
- We Used to Be Friends: Averted. When young Clemont was about to graduate, he was going to celebrate with Shinx. But the Mayor pulled him off-track with a celebratory banquet, and they never saw each other again until now. Clemont was worried Luxio felt this way as a result. But when Luxio finally recognized him, he was greeted warmly.
