Ash and co. run into Trip again. He and Ash have a best two out of three battle that ends in a draw, and Ash finally learns the real reason Oshawott has problems with Aqua Jet.

- Acrophobic Bird: It turns out the reason Oshawott's Aqua Jet is so problematic is that it's afraid to open its eyes underwater.
- Jerkass Has a Point:
- While Trip was being a jerk to Ash, he wasn't wrong for getting mad at the fact that Ash did (unintentionally) ruin his chance of catching a Palpitoad. Even Ash realized his accident and apologized to Trip for inconveniencing him.
- Trip is 100% right that it's bad for Iris trying to be a Dragon master to have a fear of something like a type weakness, especially when one of said type weaknesses is itself.
- Pet the Dog: Trip was at least willing to show Ash the picture he took of Oshawott's problem so Ash could know what to fix.
- Something We Forgot: With Ash and Iris getting distracted by an encounter (and subsequent matchup) with Trip, they completely forget that Cilan is still waiting for them with lunch.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: This episode reveals Iris's fear of Ice type Pokémon.
