Recap / My Hero Academia S2E9 "Bakugo vs. Uraraka"

Go To

Ochaco tries to beat Bakugo. Really, she does. She fights long and hard, and ultimately drops a good chunk of the ring on Bakugo, but Bakugo is just too strong. He beats Uraraka, although he does acknowledge her as a Worthy Opponent and treats the fight seriously. Ochaco has a phone conversation with her father afterwards in which he tries to console her, to little avail. In the ring, Kirishima and Tetsutetsu have an arm wrestling match to break their tie. Kirishima wins because of Tetsutetsu's Logical Weakness- if he doesn't get enough iron, he can suffer metal fatigue. Nevertheless, the two become friends. And meanwhile, Midoriya prepares for his fight against Todoroki.

Tropes:

  • Broken Tears: Uraraka takes her loss like a pro. While talking to her parents on the phone, however, she completely breaks down. After all, loss is still a loss.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Despite her best efforts, Uraraka proved no match against Bakugo, since she mainly needed to simply touch him to gain an advantage.
  • Not Me This Time: Bakugo believes that Midoriya shared information about him to Uraraka, since he usually writes everything down in a notebook. Midoriya denies it, since Uraraka declined on the offer and decided to fight on her own.
  • Shaming the Mob: The crowd starts booing Bakugo for "beating up a girl." Aizawa responds by grabbing the mike and chewing them out for doing so, pointing out that Bakugo is simply treating her as the genuine threat and skilled combatant she is, and the crowd is doing her a disservice by implying she can't stand up to him.
  • Versus Title: "Bakugo vs. Uraraka", although their fight doesn't last the entire episode.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Bakugo has no problem hitting Uraraka. But in this case, it's actually a sign of respect- he's treating her like a dangerous opponent that he can't afford to go easy against.
  • Worthy Opponent: Bakugo considers this to Uraraka, despite most of the students criticizing him for going hard on a "frail" girl. He points out that is not the case, since she refused to back down and had an effective strategy that he almost didn't see coming.
    • It is especially notable that he calls her by name, compared to how he called his partners in the Calvary Battle.
