Recap / My Hero Academia S2E3 "In Their Own Quirky Ways"

Go To

During the obstacle race, Todoroki effortlessly passes each obstacle with Bakugo in hot pursuit. At the last obstacle, Izuku uses his wits to pass through both and win the race. However, his victory is short-lived when he learns that by being first place, he is the top target for the next round.

Tropes:

  • Dark Horse Victory: For most of the obstacle course, Todoroki and Bakugo are the frontrunners... until Izuku's creative use of explosives puts him in the lead very late in the race.
  • Explosive Propulsion: Bakugo unsurprisingly uses this throughout the course. Then, Izuku tops him by using a piece of metal he grabbed from the robots at the beginning, and gathering a large amount of mines from the minefield at the end, to send himself flying ahead into the lead.
  • Loophole Abuse: Students in the U.A Support Course are implied to have quirks that aren't necessarily effective in battle, so they may not have been qualified for the Hero Course. As such, they are allowed to use any equipment they crafted beforehand to even the odds during the festival. Mei Hatsume is introduced to be part of the Support Course, showing off her gadgets to any business companies and agencies throughout the event.
  • Too Awesome to Use: Worried about injuring himself too early if he uses One For All, Izuku holds back on using it during the race. Instead, he takes his time and advantage of the course around him. Using a piece of metal and landmines, he manages to reach first place on his own.
  • Worth It: Mineta manages to win 18th place by sticking to Yaoyorozu's backside. Despite being mercilessly pummeled for it as she struggled to get him off, Mineta gleefully declares it was "killing two birds with one stone!"
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Midoriya's victory in the obstacle course is short-lived when Midnight makes him the Golden Snitch of the Calvary Battle.
