Written by: James L. Novack

Jessica helps a neighbor in her New York building who has a phobia about leaving her apartment since she saw her mother murdered five years ago.

Tropes:

  • Bluffing the Murderer: On the presumption that the killer will attempt to silence Alice, Jessica and the Police make it look like Alice is all alone and allow the killer to expose himself when attempting to kill her.
  • Catapult Nightmare: The episode opens with a woman experiencing a catapult nightmare as she relives her mother's murder in a dream.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When Jessica explores the old Brownstone that Alice and Peter Morgan used to live in, special focus was placed on the motorcycle helmet owned by Peter that had a hawk decal. It becomes important later.
    • Jessica also notes the hunting knife on the paintaing of Peter's father.
  • Fake Memories: Alice is plagued by memories which may or may not be 100% accurate, compounded by the inclusion of a hawk attacking her which didn't actually happen in the memory.
  • Murderer P.O.V.: Jessica takes Alice back to her old apartment to relive the murder. As Jessica comforts her, the camera view switches to behind them and is noticeably unsteady, heavily implying that someone is lurking there watching them. Indeed, Jessica hears floorboards creaking and actually looks directly into the camera at this point, clearly realizing that someone is there even though she can't see them, and quickly hustles Alice out.
  • Offscreen Karma: Just before the episode ends it's mentioned Dr. Holden is going to lose her license after the years she spent manipulating Alice.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jessica has this reaction upon hearing a floorboard creak and realizing that she and Alice aren't alone in the apartment.
"Right now, it's time to leave. And the sooner, the better."
  • The Shrink: Dr. Ellen Holden keeps Alice perpetually frightened of the outside world so she can continually earn money from her "treatments".
  • The Shut-In: Poor Alice.
