• Chekhov's Gag: The oft-alluded to "Man Who Met Andy Griffith" is the killer.
• Deep South: Dumpwater, Florida. On the way, Al makes a stop in Beaver Creek, Tennessee to see the "largest sinkhole in the South", and Al gets caught in an apparent speed trap in One Rock, Georgia.
  Kelly: Well Bud, here we are. Another great Bundy vacation. You know, other kids, they get to go to Europe or Hawaii. No! We get to go to Hee Haw.
• Disproportionate Retribution: The town tries to hang the Bundy's for attacking The Man Who Met Andy Griffith in self-defense.
• Early-Installment Weirdness: When Al accidentally walks in on a naked woman while looking for Peg, he's actually quite civil about it, despite the woman being presumably attractive. He simply apologizes for walking in on her and asks if she knows where Peg is, albeit forgetting her name. Later seasons would have him gushing over similar situations or reacting in abject terror if the woman wasn't as attractive.
• Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The killer is only known as "The Man Who Met Andy Griffith"
• Fake Ultimate Hero: At one point, the Bundys agree to take turns on watch while the others can sleep. Al goes first, falls asleep, and wakes up in the morning before the others do. He claims he stayed up all night to protect the family and let them sleep.
• Jerkass Has a Point: Seeing as this was before Peg became a shopaholic and the kids regularly stole from Al's wallet, they have a point that it wouldn't kill Al to spend a few more bucks on somewhere decent even if Hawaii itself was unreasonable.
• Red Herring: Kelly goes out with a guy carrying an ax, leading us to believe he's the killer. The killer is actually "The Man Who Met Andy Griffith" who was repeatedly mentioned but never seen.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The Bundys flee Dumpwater in the face of locals angry about them attacking The Man Who Met Andy Griffith. They end up having to do this again after Al returns the busted camera to Steve.
• To Be Continued: When split into two parts for reruns, this occurs when Al and Peggy scream over suddenly being attacked by the killer.
