Go To

Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Age Lift: Perley Day Wilder was a couple years younger than Laura in real life. Here, he's slightly older (about the same age as Mary and Nellie).
  • Anachronism Stew: The greased pig chase shows the animals being chased within walls made from square bales of hay. The first square hay balers were not manufactured until after 1900.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: How Almanzo comes to see Perley Day.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite the fact that Albert caused the fire that killed Andy's mother months earlier and attacked him for assuming he was trying to flirt with the girl he asked for his help to court, Andy shows no hard feelings a few days later and when Albert tries to court Penelope by presenting her with the pig he chased and she rejects him again, Andy actually defends Albert.
  • Feeling Their Age: Charles is looking forward to beating Almanzo in the armwrestling competition in part because he's feeling the effects of his middle-age. After the final round (which Almanzo interrupted to go rescue his horse from Perley Day, who insisted on running it with an injured leg), Charles admits that he couldn't keep it much longer.
  • Foreshadowing: Almanzo finally refering to Laura as a "young lady" when talking to Charles is the first sign that he's starting to see her as more than a "little girl".
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Perley Day is the Foolish to Almanzo's Responsible.
  • Get Out!: After being fed up with his brother's actions, Almanzo tells him to go away.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After intercepting Perley Day as he ran a wagon race with Almanzo's injured horse, Almanzo punches Perley Day and gives him a piece of his mind about his brother's history of irresponsible actions, running away when things got hard, breaking their mother's heart and then not appearing until he needed money or something else.
  • Regal Ringlets: Penelope's would give Nellie's a run for their money. It's a sign of what a snobbish brat she is.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Almanzo is responsible, low-key and has both feet on the ground. His brother Perley Day is the antithesis: irresponsible, high-living and occasionally dishonest.
