Recap / Legacies S2E16 "Facing Darkness Is Kinda My Thing"

Go To

Hope finds herself inside Josie's mind, which Josie has subconsciously shaped like a fairy tale. Hope meets a pigman who explains to her that "Princess Josie" has placed herself into sleep in order to avoid increasing the strength of the Darkness, which has consumed the land and which grows stronger with magic use. The Darkness appears in the form of the big bad wolf and starts chasing Hope and the pig. In the real world, Lizzie is trying to orchestrate her own funeral (disguising the sleeping Hope as Lizzie and herself as Hope). She is shocked to learn that no one at the school particularly liked her. At the funeral, she runs off when things don't go according to her plan, but then MG speaks and accuses everyone else of not giving Lizzie a chance to change, only focusing on when she was at her worst, resulting in others starting to say nice things about her. Rafael brings Alaric to Landon's body and asks him to kill him. When Alaric refuses, the Necromancer forces Rafael to bring Alaric to him and makes him an offer. Having grown annoyed at Josie taking over their partnership, the Necromancer wants to help Alaric free Josie from the dark magic, as long as he gets to absorb that dark magic. He also agrees to free Alyssa and Rafael and bring Landon back to life. Alaric initially refuses but later changes his mind. In Josie's mind, the Darkness eats the pig, but then Hope uses an axe to cut its belly open and "Princess Josie" comes out. She explains that she was disguised as the pig. Then "Evil Queen Josie" appears and attacks "Princess Josie" and Hope. Hope tells Josie that she is in charge of her own story and can rewrite it if she wants to. The Evil Queen petrifies Hope and is about to kill "Princess Josie", when Josie realizes that she can be strong without being evil, so she turns the tables on her evil self and slays her. At that moment, Lizzie and the Necromancer perform a ritual that has the Necromancer absorb all of Josie's dark magic. Josie's back to normal, although she temporarily puts her siphoning power into a coin, just in case. Alyssa and Rafael are fully alive again and no longer under the Necromancer's control. Lizzie finds out that her friends really do care about her and even gives MG his own eulogy, since she believes that everyone should get to hear their own eulogy. But Landon is still dead and Hope is still in a coma.

  • Attending Your Own Funeral: Lizzie is taking this one step further and is actually organizing her own funeral despite everyone's objections.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Hope convinces Josie to start fighting her evil self. Josie is reluctant because she has always believed that she can either be good and weak or evil and strong. Then she realizes that Hope is both good and strong and is inspired to take control, rewriting her inner reality and slaying her evil self.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Josie is finally free of the darkness, and Alyssa and Rafael are back to their old selves. But Landon is still dead and Hope hasn't come out of her coma. In addition, the Necromancer is now more dangerous than ever.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: Kaleb and Jed have a hard time finding anyone who can say anything nice about Lizzie during her eulogy video. Even when comes time for them to say something the most they can think of is Jed saying that "she was really hot" and Kaleb saying that the fact they can still remember her means she wasn't eaten by Malivore. MG wisely decides to cut the video there.
  • Hated by All: Lizzie learns the hard truth that her actions to the other students means that no one particularly misses her and people even outright laugh when "Hope" revers to her as "the best of us." That said after MG calls everyone else out for focusing on Lizzie's negative side someone else comes up to give an eulogy and its implied that the funeral goes a lot better.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: Raf again asks another person, Alaric this time, to kill him because he can't do it himself. Alaric refuses.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Lizzie tells the others that she is going to pretend to be Hope to everyone else, Jed points out that the pack will never buy it. "Hope" immediately goes to three werewolves and talks to them in a very un-Hope-like manner, and they buy it all. Jed is left to shake his head.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: Hope enters Josie's mind in order to find the "real Josie". She finds a world shaped like a fairy tale. Josie later explains that her mother has always read fairy tales to her when she was little and they made sense to her because of the clear distinction between good and evil.
  • Manipulative Editing: In order to show off how hard it is to find anyone to say something nice about Lizzie one of the people being interviewed for the eulogy video has her part clearly spliced together to say that she will be missed.
  • Pig Man: The pig Hope meets in Josie's mind keeps hiding from the Darkness (which appears as a big bad wolf) and constantly says sexist things to Hope. She eventually learns that the pig is actually Josie in disguise. The sexist comments were made deliberately to keep Hope from realizing that the pig was Josie. The pig is eaten by the Darkness, but Hope cuts the Darkness open with an axe and finds Josie inside.
  • Ring of Power: Lizzie is using Clarke's ring to make herself appear as Hope. Surprisingly, this fools those who aren't in the know, even though "Hope" is acting like Lizzie.
