Tropes

  • Breeding Cult: Lang's following is effectively a cult devoted to impregnating young girls. The detectives call it as much.
  • Broken Pedestal: Samantha realizes what Lang is selling sounds fishy and tries to leave, only to be locked in the basement of the special school and denied food and water long enough to suffer from a blood clot and die. Later, "Margery", another girl in the cult, realizes everything Lang's been telling her is a load as well when the detectives reveal the baby she's carrying isn't a clone, but a baby that is half genetically her own, as well as half from the same father of Samantha's baby ... Dr. Lang. She's the one who convinces Haggerty that Lang didn't really care about any of them and to do the right thing.
  • Evilutionary Biologist: Dr. Lang is a genetic therapy specialist with aspirations towards creating clones. In order to fund his research, he runs an illegal breeding operation. Ironically his "cloning farm" is a hoax, what he's advertising as cloned babies are actually babies he impregnated with his own sperm using underaged surrogates.
  • Innocent Bystander: When they first find Samantha's body she appears to be this, as it seems she took a stray bullet in an alley after a burglary gone wrong. In fact, at first the police have to work to make sure it was one of the suspects that shot her, and not the police officer handling the assignment. However, it turns out Samantha was already dead for several hours before the bullet hit her head.
  • Medical Rape and Impregnate: Girls are artificially impregnated by Dr. Lang's own DNA.
  • Narcissist: Dr. Lang is referred to as such by the FBI agent.
  • Obscene OB-GYN: Dr. Garret Lang is a hormone and genetic therapy specialist who secretly leads a breeding cult of underage girls whose offspring he sells to fund his research.
  • Peace & Love Incorporated: Dr. Lang owns a clinic specializing in hormone treatments to prevent aging and uses the profits to establish a network of charities and self-help organizations dedicated to helping the disadvantaged and disenfranchised. If you've already realized that the whole thing is a Path of Inspiration, you get a cookie.
  • Runaway Hideaway: Haggerty runs a school, funded by Dr. Lang, that takes in girls who have tested to have the right personality from his study programs (i.e. are gullible enough) to believe his ranting about the holes in the ozone layer causing mass sterilization and that clone babies are the only way to save humanity. The girls kept there were reported as kidnapped/missing, but the girls assert they are runaways of their own accord .. of course, being they are only 14 they are still returned to their parents anyway.
  • Token Good Teammate: Unlike most of the group who were just using the girls to further a scheme, Mrs. Haggerty genuinely loved them and wanted the best for them, and had even been trying to help Samantha, against Lang's orders, the night she died (unfortunately, Lang showed up to stop her before she could). She ultimately agrees to testify against Lang when the detectives show her how he was manipulating her and taking advantage of the girls.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Haggerty reveals the whole story in court, Lang loses his cool and starts screaming and ranting at everyone.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist:
    • Paula Haggerty genuinely believed she was helping girls in need.
    • Dr. Lang would like you to believe he is this as well, especially during his anger fueled rant where he asserts the world is dying and the only way to save it is through his cloning research, which he funded by impregnating underaged girls and selling their babies back to rich couples who think they are getting their dead children back as cloned miracle babies. It's heavily implied Lang actually believes all his own BS.
  • Would Hurt a Child: When Samantha realizes Lang is most likely a fraud, she wants to leave the school, only for Lang to order her to be locked in the basement and denied food and water. After several days Haggerty realizes Samantha is in really bad shape and tries to get her some water, only for Lang to show up and stop her, and Samantha dying from a blood clot in her lungs caused by dehydration not long after.
