Recap / Law & Order: Special Victims Unit S23E17 "Once Upon a Time in El Barrio"

Go To

Velasco gets a call from his old priest in Juárez, Mexico. The priest voices concern about some missing young women, leading the squad to search for human traffickers and their victims.

Tropes

  • Dirty Cop: Captain Kubiak assists the traffickers in exchange for money and sexual services.
  • Disposable Woman: The villain Jorge Padilla kills a woman early in the episode. Her death becomes the Inciting Incident, prompting Detective Velasco to find her killer.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Kubiak (one of the more blatant Dirty Cops in this series) has a pretty high opinion of himself all things considered. He's vehement he's not a rapist, a paedophile or a cop killer after he's arrested. Lucia is his girlfriend not his victim, according to him at least. Once it's revealed in the finale that she's only 15 he's forced to realise that the first two are now definitely true; but the detectives never discover if he knew he was sending his subordinate detective to her death.
  • Human Traffickers: The villains of this episode.
  • It's Personal: The victims are from the same city as Detective Velasco (Juárez, Mexico). He learns they are missing when he gets a call from their priest.
  • Kill It with Fire: One victim, Maribel, refuses to cooperate with the trafficker, Jorge Padilla. He responds by quickly and horrifically burning her alive.
  • Pursue the Dream Job: A tragic example. Valeria has done some school plays, and wants to become a professional actress. She goes with her friends to a scam “modeling agency.” The agency charges each woman a steep entry fee, then lures her to work as a Sex Slave and/or perform Ethnic Menial Labor to pay it off.
