Tropes

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Dwight is this, being an abusive stepfather to Will.
    • Will's father also shows shades of this during the interview scene, grabbing and hitting his son to make him stop.
  • Asshole Victim: Dwight physically abused his stepson and Irena and threatened to beat Irena’s family after he was done with his bath. It’s also revealed that he has another wife whom he kept a secret from Irena and claimed he left the first wife for her.
  • The Bus Came Back: Pippa Cox returns after her last appearance in "Collateral Damages".
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Irena has dealt with abusive households her life since childhood. Her ex-husband was abusive to not only her, but also her son and Dwight is no different than him.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Dwight's solution to being told his daughter needs to pee while he's in the bath? Beat his family, likely to death. Luckily that never happens.
  • Domestic Abuse: Dwight physically abused Irena just as much as he abused Will. When she was found in her apartment, she had a black-eye, bruising on her arm, and a head injury. She also talks about how her ex-husband was abusive to her.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Will contemplated killing his stepfather to protect both his mother and his little sister. He was willing to plead guilty of killing Dwight and tried to stop his mother from confessing to the murder in court.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The picture Carisi has on his desk in his new office is the one he took of Rollins and baby Jesse on the carousel in season 17.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: According to Rollins, the reason Benson is so careful with this case is that she has never forgiven herself for Mike Dodds' death on a domestic violence call four years earlier.
  • Mama Bear: After everything, it turns out Irene was the one who killed Dwight to keep him from beating Will, as well as the rest of his family, including his daughter.
