Recap / Law & Order S18E10 "Tango"

Go To

A high school girl named Ann-Marie Liscombe goes missing. It emerges that she was in a hotel room with an unknown man and an escort named Melinda Whitman. Subsequently, Ann-Marie is found raped and murdered in a dumpster. Whitman won't say who the man at the hotel with Ann-Marie was, so Lupo has an idea to send her a forged note and have her lead them to the guy. He turns out to be Tito Cabassa, her boyfriend and pimp. Under pressure, Whitman breaks down and says Tito raped and murdered Ann-Marie in front of her.

However, a judge rules Whitman's statement inadmissible due to the note Lupo sent. Cutter and Rubirosa interview witnesses and learn that Tito thought he'd killed Ann-Marie, so he went to look for somewhere to dump the body; Whitman realized Ann-Marie was still alive and finished her off. Tito agrees to a plea deal in exchange for his testimony against Whitman. Cutter has Rubirosa cross-examine Tito in order to get the jury's sympathy and she receives an anonymous email from an admiring juror.

Rubirosa is later approached by Mr. Campbell, the juror with a crush on her. She realizes Cutter deliberately chose Campbell for the jury because Campbell liked her. Rubirosa accuses Cutter of "pimping (her) out to the jury"; but he says it's what they have to do to win cases, and points out Rubirosa previously took advantage of a witness's attraction to her. Cutter warns that if Rubirosa says anything to the judge, the case will be declared a mistrial and Whitman will go free. Rubirosa keeps quiet and the jury convicts, but Rubirosa is obviously very conflicted.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Whitman is convicted of second degree murder, however it's implied this only happened because Cutter deliberately manipulated a juror's attraction to Rubirosa. Although she doesn't bring her concerns to the judge for the sake of a conviction, she is VERY displeased with Cutter's actions.
  • Chain of Deals: In exchange for a witness's testimony, McCoy has to agree to get his drug dealing charges rescinded, which in turn requires making a deal with the Bronx DA's office to get an ADA off a parking offense.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Whitman for Tito.
  • Empty Cop Threat: Lupo's note to Whitman, which backfires when it leads to a judge refusing to admit evidence.
  • Empty Promise: Green promises the Liscombes that he'll find their daughter, only for her to show up dead. Lupo wryly comments that Green was right, they did find her ...
  • Fetishized Abuser: Tito Cabassa forces his girlfriend Melinda Whitman to watch him rape and murder missing girls. This has caused her to become a Clingy Jealous Girl for him — feeling resentment against his victims and covering for him. On top of that, Tito is selfish enough to save himself at her expense.
  • Friendly Rivalry: McCoy's relationship with the Bronx DA.
  • Missing White Woman Syndrome: Referenced by McCoy when Tito requests a plea deal, knowing that as a man of color it's likely a jury would want to convict him and acquit white Whitman.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Green promises the Liscombes that he'll find their daughter, only for her to show up dead.
  • Ship Tease: Cutter and Rubirosa.
  • Third-Person Person: Tito.
  • Wild Teen Party: Ann-Marie had been to one shortly before her murder.
