Recap / King Of The Hill S 11 E 8 Grand Theft Arlen

Go To

The one where Hank gets obsessed with a video game.

Hank protests against a new school program that lets failing gym students play video games —- and becomes addicted to Pro-Pain, a Grand Theft Auto knockoff centered on propane and featuring Hank as the protagonist. Meanwhile, Bobby trains for the Presidential Physical Fitness Test.

Tropes:

  • 2D Visuals, 3D Effects: The backgrounds for the "Pro-Pain" video game are the only 3D rendered elements to it. The characters and vehicles are done up in standard hand-drawn animation.
  • Call-Back: One of the antagonists in the "Pro-Pain" game looks just like Alabaster, the pimp Hank encounters in the episode "Ho Yeah!".
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Peggy collaborates with the designers of Pro-Pain to break Hank's addiction by deleting the game thanks to installing her character in "Commissioner Mode." Hank literally begs her not to do it and she almost relents when she sees how badly Hank wants to keep playing, but ultimately destroys the game for his own good.
  • God Mode: When Peggy sees that Hank's gaming is getting out of hand, she seeks help from "Pro-Pain"'s programmers, who grant her avatar "Commissioner Mode" status, meaning that her character cannot be killed. Once she mops up the floor with Hank's "manager" character, Peggy enters a code to deactivate the game once and for all.
  • I Just Want to Be You: Bill eagerly hopes to play "Pro-Pain" for the sake of getting to be Hank. His immediate response to playing is to ask where Peggy is in the game.
  • Not So Above It All: Hank immediately gets addicted to Pro-Pain once he realizes he has an easier time "advancing" to different levels of employment than he does at the real Strickland Propane.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: Bobby thinks this after getting nothing more than a blank fridge magnet for his performance at the Presidential Physical Fitness Test. But Hank thinks otherwise and to prove his point, he points out that Bobby was at least able to do a chin-up, while some of the other students are barely even able to do it at all.
  • Secret Test of Character: Invoked and subverted. Bobby thinks it's this when he makes a little gain in exercise and Hank tells him to go get his Gameboy. Bobby pauses, accusing his father (who ordinarily hates video games) of trying to trick him; at that point, Peggy walks by, causing Hank to loudly exclaim that it was a trick, and that Bobby passed. As soon as Peggy leaves the room, Hank whispers to Bobby to get his Game Boy again, but Bobby merely thinks Hank's still testing him, and doesn't fall for it.

Pro-PAIN!

While studying a GTA-parody game based around Strickland Propane for copyright, Hank Hill learns that there are moments in the game where it is not always about the mayhem, oddly touching that the developers put such moments into the game that rewards human decency and kindness.

How well does it match the trope?
