Batman rescuing Zatanna

The current threat in a Gotham City? This time it's the new and improved Harley Quinn, now augmented with magic! Thankfully, Zatanna is able stop Harley before she even gets started.

With the threat handled, the two old friends turn to the source of Harley's magical accessories: Brother Night. They confront him and tell him to stop outfitting Gotham's criminals with magic, Batman going through the Brother Night thugs. After defeating them, Ember tries to burn Batman, but Zatanna comes to the rescue and aborts Ember attack. Brother Night scoffs at them and allows them to leave, but places a curse on one of Batman's weapons, sending it to allow Brother Night to possess the Batmobile.

As the car transforms into a demonic monster, Zatanna prepares to unhex it, only for the Demon!Batmobile to wrap Zatanna up from mouth to toe in its ejector parachute and trap her in its trunk. Batman realizes he can't fight his possessed car alone.

Zatanna (as she is gagged and imprisoned by the batmobile): Anything he can hex, I can undo- MMMPH NNGMPH!!

At the home of Jason Blood, Batman arrives and tells the sorcerer to summon the demon Etrigan. Blood refuses until Batman elaborates that Brother Night has enchanted the Batmobile and it is roaring around the city wreaking havoc. Blood relents and recites the incantation that allows the demon to trade bodies with him, only for the Demon!Batmobile to run him over. Etrigan is merely annoyed at having to throw it off.

Etrigan: Driving downtown is such a pain / But parking on me? That's insane!

The demon is happy to take the fight to the street with gratuitous violence.

Etrigan: Lovely mage must not be fried / we'll have to force our way inside.

The fight sprawls all over Gotham and into a park full of people enjoying ice cream before Etrigan realizes it will be for naught as the Demon!Batmobile is too fast. He summons Merlin so the wizard can turn a GPD ruggedized vehicle into an enchanted roadster for him, but it is destroyed. Merlin is about to leave when Etrigan spots another vehicle...

Meanwhile, Batman has managed to hang onto the chassis of the Batmobile. Batman recovers Zatanna from the trunk. However the Demon!Batmobile is playing chicken with an oncoming commuter train. Etrigan makes his entrance driving a demonically souped up version of the ice cream truck from the park. He forces the Demon!Batmobile onto the tunnel ceiling to prevent collision.

Once free, Zatanna is able to kill the curse on the car. Zatanna scolds Batman for leaving something he owns where Brother Night could use it against him. Etrigan, pleased the fight is over, presents Zatanna with a large vanilla cone, She happily accepts.

Zatanna: Ooh, sprinkles!

Batman refuses any ice cream, more concerned about the state of his car. He opens the hood... Only to have the magically abused Batmobile literally fall to pieces at his feet. Seeing the impossible repair job in front of him, Batman relents,

Batman: Chocolate.

Tropes:

  • Affably Evil: Brother Night appears cordial, is impressed with Batman’s physical capabilities and overall seems like a pleasant fellow. Just happens to be a powerful user of black magic and the supernatural equivalent of an Arms Dealer.
  • Bound and Gagged: The possessed Batmobile binds and gags Zatanna with the ejection parachute and locks her in the trunk.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Zatanna spends much of the episode gagged and trapped in the Batmobile's trunk, preventing her from using her magic to immediately fix the situation.
  • Exact Words/ Loophole Abuse: Par for the course with Brother Night’s character as a Faustian deal maker. He “promised” Batman and Zatanna he wouldn’t touch a living soul. This of course gave him free reign to enchant the Batmobile and use it against them.
  • Got Me Doing It: This exchange:
Etrigan: Done and done! Free the lady and the night is won!
    (they nearly get run over)
Batman: Apparently easier said than done.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Family-friendly version with ice cream instead in "Speed Demon".
    Zatanna: What are you having?
Batman: I'm dealing with more important things right now.
(tries to fix the Batmobile, but it falls to pieces)
    Batman: ...Chocolate.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Etrigan is a rhyming demon and with very few exceptions, communicates only in rhyming couplets.
  • Mythology Gag: A monitor screen shows Satan Girl, a recurring Supergirl foe who first appeared in The Condemned Legionnaires.
  • Sharing a Body: Jason Blood and Etrigan are magically cursed together. An incantation allows Etrigan to come out, and another allows Jason Blood to return once Etrigan is no longer needed.
  • Shown Their Work: Batman's choice of ice cream speaks to the writing team's awareness that Batman is a student of psychology. Chocolate can assist with the brain producing serotonin, which wards off depression.
