Recap / J-WITCH S2 E5, "Rigging the Games"

Go To

The J-WITCH team must compete in a reality TV show in order to retrieve the gourd containing the chi of Bai Tza the Water Demon.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Elyon is able to tap into the Guardians' Psychic Link, without knowing about it or how to access it. Her best guess is that having the Heart of Meridian lets her connect with the Heart of Kandrakar.
  • Adapted Out: The German family that the Chans competed against in canon is absent, as the heroes have a large enough group to form two teams.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Since the heroes have a large enough group to split into two teams, they compete against each other instead of against a random family of Germans.
    • Miranda is the one to use the Water Demon Chi.
    • Thanks to Will being able to talk to the show's electronics, which witnessed her presence, the heroes learn of Nerissa aiding the Knights of Vengeance (though not her name) in this chapter, which takes place between the W.I.T.C.H. episodes "C is for Changes" and "D is for Destruction". Canonically, the Guardians didn't realize someone else was pulling the Knights' strings until "E is for Enemy".
  • Jedi Mind Trick:
    • Thanks to training from the Mage, Elyon has learned how to do this intentionally, as shown when she makes the boat driver taking her back to the mainland turn around and return her to the island.
    • Nerissa does something similar to put the show's entire crew to sleep in order to not have any witnesses to the fight over the Demon Chi.
  • No-Sell: Nerissa casts a spell on Hak Foo, Raythor and Frost that more strongly binds their borrowed Fire Demon Chi to them, preventing Uncle from being able to remove it from them.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: When Nerissa enchants Hak Foo, Raythor, and Frost so they won't have their demon chi sucked out, Miranda wonders why the former doesn't do the same for the other Knights. Nerissa explains that there needs to be demon chi already in their bodies for the spell to work.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: At the end of the chapter, Jackie calls out Cornelia and Caleb for how their bickering and need to one-up each other made the group's efforts to retrieve the gourd needlessly complicated, and messed up their fight against the Knights. The two have a Jerkass Realization in response, and resolve to do better.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Irma's reaction to finding out that the reality show has hundreds of spare gourds, making it impossible to quickly track down the one containing the Demon Chi.
