Recap / iCarly (2021) S1E3 "iFauxpologize"

Go To

While Spencer creates art for an upcoming exhibition, Carly's photo of her looking disgusted after eating a meatball goes viral and is inadvertently seen as a criticism of Spencer's artwork. Carly tries to show her support for him by attending the exhibition, only for him to use it to slander her. Meanwhile, in an attempt to compete with Carly, Millicent accidentally discovers an old post from Freddie saying he never wanted kids, and proceeds to blackmail him for it.

Tropes:

  • Backhanded Apology: When Spencer demands an apology from Carly for the meme, her response is "I'm sorry if your feelings were hurt. I didn't realize you were so sensitive." Spencer deems it a "Fauxpology". She does apologize for real at the end.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Spencer is upset with Carly for milking the popularity of her meme face, as it is taking attention away from his art. In retaliation for her refusal to apologize, he turns his art exhibit into a Take That! towards online creators, which upsets not only Carly, but many other local content creators who storm the exhibit in protest. Carly informs Spencer that online creators have value to society even though they're not "true artists" like him.
  • Ear Worm: Millicent writes a jingle for her business. Everyone sings it at the end of the episode.
  • Feud Episode: Between Carly and Spencer. After Harper uploads an image of Carly spitting out a rancid meatball, the image goes viral and Harper urges Carly to cash in on its popularity. But in the process, she accidentally ruins Spencer's reputation as an artist (his latest sculpture was in the background and people thought Carly's cringe-y expression was aimed at the sculpture). In retaliation for her Backhanded Apology and refusal to let the meme die out, he creates an entire art exhibit meant to slander internet culture, which Carly livestreams and draws a crowd of local internet creators to crash the exhibit. When Carly urges Spencer to apologize for pissing off the rioters, even though he didn't intend to, she realizes that she did the same thing to him and gives Spencer a real apology.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Millicent makes a good point about how Carly's photo, while popular now, could come back to haunt her in the future. Which is exactly what she wants to happen.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Millicent describes some of the bad things that could come from Carly's meme, such as "a worldwide pandemic where it becomes illegal to spit." Naturally, Freddie dismisses the fear, saying, "You shouldn't worry about things that will never happen." The season was filmed during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: An in-universe example. Harper says that all publicity is good publicity and encourages Carly to capitalize on the meme's popularity while she still can and that Spencer should be happy that his sculpture is being publicized. Harper's ultimately proven wrong, as Carly and Spencer's actions end up summoning a group of protesters to crash Spencer's exhibit.
  • Shout-Out: Miranda Cosgrove's "Interesting" meme from Drake & Josh is re-enacted twice. First by Carly, then by Millicent.
  • Take That!: This episode contains many which are directed towards internet "influencers", "cancel culture" and easily offended "snowflakes". However, Spencer is shown to be equally petty in his criticisms of them.
