The master of the con meets the master of the fumble tumble.

An old mate of Ash's, bumbling ex-con "Liability" Finch, gets into trouble for stealing a Van Gogh painting, and has got Interpol tracking his every movement. After a series of mishaps, The crew are forced to work with Customs to con Finch.

Guest Stars Mark Benton as "Liability" Finch.

Tropes:

  • Enforced Method Acting: In-Universe example. Finch was never told about any of the diversion portion of the con because his involvement would kill it stone dead. However, Ash sent him an intentionally time-stamped photo via mobile which the crew knew Finch would show to customs by accident, and would divert customs to them, and not Albert, who stopped over in Brazil to pick up the painting.
  • Imagine Spot: Mickey has one that involves an elaborate plan with coffee, a golden ticket, sending an elderly couple on a package holiday, as well as Mickey having contacts in Brazil. The plan is not too far off what actually happens; the coffee offices are used as a front, the package holiday was given to an old couple as planned, in this case by former grifters, and the contact in Brazil is Albert, who stops over in Brazil..
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: 'Liability' Finch because, as the name suggests, he's staggeringly incompetent at any sort of crime. Even when the crew are helping him, they basically work around him rather than include him in plans he'd only screw up.
Mickey (on why they won't entertain his plans): Because we're professionals, because we don't like prison and because we don't work with anyone who has 'Liability' in their name!
  • Only One Name: Finch doesn't have a first name; his only nickname is what he goes by, much to his annoyance.
  • Stupid Crooks: 'Liability' Finch, in spectacular fashion. He's so slow he has to get Eddie, of all people, to explain Mickey's plan to him after the fact.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Invoked multiple times to keep Finch in the dark about what was really going on, see above. Lampshaded by Finch, who sums up the whole series' structure at one point (if you think you know how the con works, you don't).
  • Walking Disaster Area: Finch in a nutshell. No sane con artist works with him because he's an idiot who has a big heart, just not much skill.
