Marshall and Lily buy an apartment in "Dowisetrepla" without thinking it over properly, while Barney takes it as an opportunity to sleep with women without giving away his address.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Artistic License – Geography: In this episode, Robin says Mt. Waddington is the highest mountain in Canada. Truthfully Mt. Logan's the tallest peak in that nation. Additionally Mount Waddington isn't even the tallest mountain in British Columbia. (But perhaps "Waddington" sounds funnier than "Logan.")
  • Credit Card Plot: Lily has been keeping it secret from Marshall.
  • Divorce Is Temporary: Lily suggests this to Marshall, saying that they could technically be divorced according to the law, but still consider themselves married and not change anything, just so Marshall can apply for a home loan without her debt bringing the interest rate up.
  • Foreshadowing: Pay close attention to the view out the window in the Dowisetrepla apartment scenes.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Invoked. Everybody toasts Marshall and Lily's decision to buy an apartment as "their first step into adulthood", then they chant "Chug! Chug! Chug!" as the couple down their champagne.
  • Idiot Ball: Future!Ted's in-universe judgment on pretty much everyone whenever the "is what so-and-so should have said" bit happens, as he's comparing the intelligent decisions they should have made with the idiotic choices they actually made - specially Marshall and Lily for desperately paying too much money to get the first decent house they find, not looking into important problems it might have, and getting the high-interest loan to buy it anyway even after Lily's massive debt indicated that they should have been looking to rent instead, but also himself, Robin, and Barney for encouraging them instead of telling them they were making a mistake.
  • One-Steve Limit: Subverted. The Daphne in this episode is just one of Lily & Marshall's daughters in Lily's imagination. This is before we see an existent Daphne in Season 9 who'll be Marshall's driving companion over a few episodes.
  • Oh, Crap!: Marshall and Lily's reaction when they found out the truth behind their new apartment.
  • Portmanteau, Portmantitle: Dowisetrepla (Down Wind of the Sewage Treatment Plant)
  • Retail Therapy: Lily is discovered to have engaged in this to a ridiculous degree, maxing out multiple credit cards on expensive designer clothes.
  • Running Gag: Character A says something reasonable, and then the scene pauses and Future!Ted says "...is what [Character A] should have said", and then the scene rewinds and shows Character A actually saying the opposite.
  • Tropaholics Anonymous: Robin takes Lily to an AA style meeting for her shopoholicism.
