Recap / Hell Girl S 2 E 18 That Persons History

Go To

Rina Takeda comes home from work one day to find her mother, who left the family when she was a little girl, has returned an invalid. Not only that, but her father, Ryohei, wants her to have to pamper her mother every day, causing problems for the girl. Rina uses the Hell Link to get rid of her mother, and tries to do so eventually, but finds that she cannot, because her father used the Hell Link and therefore got the straw doll she had. She rushes over to where her father is taking her mother for a walk, but finds her father has already sent her mother to Hell. Her father tells her the truth: Rina is not the daughter of the woman she thought was her mother. After discovering she was infertile, the wife encouraged the husband to have a child with another woman. Even though this was her idea, it caused his wife to get angry and leave, and eventually attempt suicide by throwing herself in front of a car. Rina then remembers that her mother did accept her once, but knows it is too late.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Michiyo was cold and neglectful to Rina as a child and eventually walked out on the family. Turns out she was never Rina's real mother and resented Rina for it.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Michiyo is sent to Hell after refusing to forgive Ryohei, but this is treated as for the best by both Rina and Ai's companions, since Rina is able to move on, and Michiyo is "saved" from continuing to live a hellish existence on Earth.
  • Bungled Suicide: Michiyo tried to kill herself after a confrontation with Ryohei, resulting in the injuries that forced her to move in with him and Rina at the beginning of the episode.
  • Demoted to Extra: Even more so than usual. Ai's companions barely show up in this episode due to the heavy focus on the struggle between Rina, Ryohei, and Michiyo.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Ryohei sends Michiyo to Hell after she refuses to forgive him for bringing Rina into the world and for "betraying" her.
  • Freudian Excuse: Michiyo treats Rina and Ryohei coldly because she can't forgive Ryohei for having a child with another woman.
  • No Sympathy for Grudgeholders: Downplayed. Michiyo isn't treated entirely unsympathetically by the narrative, despite her refusal to forgive her ex-husband and accept that Rina exists. She's one of the few Hell Correspondence victims that is peacefully and quietly ferried to Hell, and the second to last shot of the episode implies that she perhaps did have some love for Rina, despite her reluctance to ever fully show it.
  • The Reveal: Rina is not Michiyo's daughter, instead being the child of a surrogate, which is why she treats her and Ryohei so coldly.
  • Secret Test: After learning that she couldn't bear Ryohei's children, Michiyo implored him to have a child with another woman as a secret test of his love for her. When he actually went through with it, she couldn't bear his betrayal and eventually abandoned the family.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Inverted. Rina doesn't resemble either of her parents that strongly, which serves as a vague hint that something is off about the family. As it turns out, Ryohei is, indeed, her father, but Michiyo isn't her mother.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Rina's mother, who is ungracious even after her family takes her in and saves her from being put in an institution.
