Recap / Hell Girl S 1 E 15 Island Woman

Go To

Hajime and Tsugumi are taking a ferry to Rogetsu Island where Ai's next client lives. Hajime talks to one of the passengers whose arm is injured for information. At an inn on the island, Mina Minato runs out and her aunt, an innkeeper named Fujie, demands to know where she's going. Ai, Ichimoku Ren and Hone Onna follow Mina into town. As Mina reaches the dock, Ai's minions speculate that she is waiting for her boyfriend. They see Hajime and Ren wonders if he'll ever give up. The passenger, Yuuji is Mina's boyfriend and when he disembarks, Mina says they need to talk. Fujie, who was spying on them, walks off as Mina glares at her. Tsugumi recognizes Mina from her visions. Hajime decides to ask the residents about Mina, but they deny knowing anything. Hajime eventually gets a shopkeeper to talk to him by saying he's writing an article on the island. The shopkeeper mentions that Fujie owns the inn and she had a sister named Satsuki, Mina's mother, who died fifteen years ago. The shopkeeper says that Satsuki once left for the mainland with her boyfriend, but they broke up and Satsuki came back to the island shortly after Mina was born. Satsuki committed suicide by jumping into the ocean two years later, leaving Mina with Fujie. Ichimoku Ren scares the shopkeeper into kicking Hajime out by projecting his eye onto Hajime's chest. Hajime still refuses to give up, surprising Ren and Hone Onna.

In a storage cellar behind the inn, Fujie tells her dead sister that she's doing what she's doing for Mina's sake. Meanwhile, Hajime talks to the principal of a local school. who says that Mina and Fujie used to get along very well until Fujie forced Mina to drop out of a high school on the mainland. Fujie had been grooming Mina to take over the family business, but the reason Fujie forced Mina to drop out was because she had a boyfriend. Hajime asks about Yuuji and the principal says that he's a government worker studying fisheries and that he and Mina are dating, though Fujie forbade it. That evening on a cliff overlooking the ocean, Ai watches as Mina talks to Yuuji about his injury. Mina says that Fujie attacked him while he was diving, but Yuuji thinks his attacker was just some poacher. When Mina confronted Fujie about the attack, she didn't even bother to deny it. Mina shows Yuuji Wanyuudo's straw doll, saying she has no other choice.

Hajime rents a room at Fujie's inn and says he wants to interview Mina about an essay she wrote a few years back. Fujie takes pride in her niece's accomplishment and Hajime says Fujie doesn't seem so bad. After Fujie leaves, Tsugumi has a vision of cherry blossoms and a waterfall. Meanwhile at the cliff, Yuuji says that the doll is evil, but Mina says that nothing else will stop Fujie. Ai says that the decision whether to pull the thread or throw the doll off the cliff rests with Mina, which Tsugumi repeats in her trance. Hajime heads for the cliffs followed by Hone Onna and Ren. Mina and Yuuji agree to untie the thread together, but Hajime stops them. Hajime says that the deal with Hell Girl will eventually ruin Mina's life even before Ai collects her soul. Mina and Yuuji decide to just elope. The couple thanks Hajime and head off. Once they're out of sight, Hone Onna knocks Hajime over the rail onto a lower ledge. Tsugumi sees Mina walk out of the inn. Mina stops when she hears Fujie's voice coming from the storage cellar and then is shocked to hear an apparent conversation between Fujie and her mother Satsuki. Mina enters the cellar and is horrified to find Fujie talking to her mother's corpse. Fujie reveals that she killed Satsuki because Satsuki hated the island. Fujie chides Mina for thinking ill of her aunt as "Satsuki" by imitating her sister's voice. Fujie brandishes a hatchet, saying that now the three can be together forever. Mina tries to pull the thread, but Fujie knocks the doll out of her hand. Yuuji rushes in and tries to stop Fujie, but is knocked away. Mina pulls the thread to stop Fujie from attacking Yuuji and Hajime realizes he was too late. On Ai's boat, Fujie holds Satsuki's skull, professing her love for sister. Wanyuudo says tells Fujie that her niece was willing to leave her alone, but she had to force the issue.

On the way back from the island, Tsugumi tells Hajime that it wasn't his fault. Hajime says it was naïve to think that he could have stopped them. On the island, Mina and Yuuji look at the seal on Mina's chest. A candle with Mina's name is lit.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Berserk Button: Fujie does not like people badmouthing the island.
  • Driven to Suicide: The townspeople thought that this happened to Satsuki, but it isn't true.
  • Faceless Eye: Ren projects his eye onto Hajime's chest to scare off a guy that Hajime was asking for information.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Mina only pulls the string when Fujie is about to kill her at that very second. Luckily/unluckily for her, Hell Girl doesn't delay.
  • Hope Spot: Hajime almost stopped Mina from pulling the string. Almost.
  • Mummies at the Dinner Table: Fujie keeps her sister's dead body in the storage cellar and holds "conversations" with it by imitating Satsuki's voice. She planned on doing the same with Mina.
  • Never Found the Body: Because Fujie hid Satsuki's in the cellar.
  • Why Did You Make Me Hit You?: Fujie invokes this toward Mina...while brandishing an axe.
  • Yandere: A familial variation. Fujie is obsessive towards Mina, just as she was to Satsuki. She even tried to murder Mina's boyfriend so they wouldn't leave the island together.
  • You're Insane!: Mina says this to Fujie when she finds out the truth about her mother's death.
