Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E20 "Grounded"

Go To

Having questions about the aliens upon the revelations in the last episode, Gretel is on edge at any U.F.O. sighting, to the point that she neglected her task to do the dishes and instead opted to investigate one of them. By the time she returns home, she had completely forgotten the dishes and gets grounded for the weekend. Unbeknownst to her, however, the aliens she's looking for decide to bestow a sloppy joe at a campground with superpowers, turning it into a sentient meat monster. Once she hears of the meat monster, Gretel tries to find a way so she can defeat the meat monster without leaving her room... and she accomplishes this by having Hamster move the house to the monster while Kevin tries to keep their parents from finding out.

Tropes:

  • Blob Monster: The sentient sloppy joe monster is basically a meat version of this.
  • The Cameo: The farmer and his wife from Phineas and Ferb make a brief appearance in a Cutaway Gag.
  • Description Cut: Disappointed that the latest U.F.O. sighting was false alarm, Gretel reasons they may be overreacting and that the aliens might not be doing crazy and impulsive things. But right as she leaves, guess what spaceship is revealed behind the false U.F.O., and guess what they're doing?
Male alien: Let's do something crazy and impulsive!
  • Fun with Acronyms: Gretel sneaks out to investigate a recent U.F.O. sighting... only for it to be a glowing blimp reading "United Financial Offices: Taxes Done Slowly".
Hamster: The three saddest words in the English language.
  • Kids Hate Chores: Gretel in particular doesn't like doing the dishes (something that was hinted at in an earlier episode), and has tried getting out of doing it so many times that her parents are putting their foot down on it this time. Sure enough, when Gretel ditches her chore to look for a U.F.O. sighting, she gets grounded for the weekend.
  • Loophole Abuse: Gretel attempts to find a way to fight the meat monster while abiding to her punishment. The solution she comes up with... is a bit extreme.
  • No-Sell: Since the meat monster is made of mushy, minced beef, most of Gretel's attacks are ineffective to it. In order for her attacks to actually be effective, Gretel has to overcook it using her heat vision.
  • Running Gag:
    • Twice in the epsiode, Gretel has to admit that Kevin was right, with Hamster adding "the three saddest words in the English language."
    • An old lady by the name of Mrs. Maybank steps out to go to her optometrist appointment just as the apartment building is flying in the air. She reacts as if she just notices this, but is actually going back inside to get her phone. This happens once more, when the house is in the woods (when she returns to get her glasses), and then again during the musical montage, as she's even launched towards a court net that bounces her back to the porch (as she goes back inside to turn the stove off). As she's exiting the apartment for the fourth time, the building is finally back where it originally was. However, she remembers the appointment is tomorrow.
  • Stealth Pun: The title. Of course, the name comes from Gretel being grounded, but also from the fact that she's fighting ground beef.
  • You Are Grounded!: Carolina and Dave ground Gretel for the weekend after she skipped on doing the dishes one too many times.
