Recap / Greys Anatomy S 07 E 18 Song Beneath The Song

Go To

A catastrophic event leaves Callie, on the verge of a life-changing moment, and her baby in mortal danger as the doctors race to save their lives; through Torres' eyes, she and the audience see her friends and colleagues liek never before.

This episode shows examples of...

  • Bait-and-Switch: The episode seems to hint that the events of the episode are beginning to push Mark and Lexie back together again, particularly the "Running On Sunshine" where he's using her for a Lap Pillow while showing all of the current couples. However, in the end nothing seems to come of it and Lexie stays with Jackson.
  • Big "YES!": Downplayed. What's the first thing Callie says when she wakes up? To tell Arizona and yes, she'll marry her.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Callie and her (and Arizona and Mark's) newborn baby Sofia survive and on the road to recovery, though it will long and difficult one; despite this, the first thing Callie does when she wakes up is say yes to Arizona' proposal. However, Christina going over Teddy's head to use an experimental but successful procedure to save Callie puts them on the outs and the latter severe their teacher-student relationship.note
  • Crowd Song: Twice the characters all participate in the same song: one features all the current couples (plus Lexie and Mark) singing about their love for each other [Running on Sunshine by Jesus Jackson] and the second is when they're all working together to save Callie and the baby. [How to Save A Life by The Fray]
  • Innocently Insensitive: Mark's argument with Arizona has him bring up the fact that technically speaking she has no say as to any decision regarding the baby since he's the father, Callie's the mother, and Arizona is only Callie's girlfriend. Completely unaware as that was exactly what she and Callie were arguing about right before the car accident.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: It's not clear if Callie's having an actual Out Of Body Experience and seeing her colleagues work to save her and the baby while singing and dancing; or the audience is simply seeing the characters do so as a framing device.
  • Musical Episode: A first for the series as we see the songs that usually play in the background at key emotional moments is at forefront as all of the main characters get a chance to sing though none of them know it since its mainly to be a hallucination on Callie's part.
  • One of Our Own: This episode features Callie Torres being the patient following a horrific car accident with the doctors at Seattle Grace trying to save her life along with that of the baby.
