Recap / Friends S 7 E 9 The One With All The Candy

Go To

Monica decides to make candy for their neighbours to get to know them. Many people from the building keep flocking in front of Monica and Chandler's apartment and want to have more of Monica's delicious candy but they actually don't even remember her name. Chandler stands up for her and sends everyone away and asks them to leave them alone.

Rachel and her assistant Tag keep dating and try to hide their relationship at work. Rachel is supposed to write an evaluation for Tag. She fills one as a flirtatious joke and assumes that Tag will read it, but it's marked as confidential, so he sends it to human resources. Rachel is afraid she will get fired but Tag takes it on himself. Rachel's boss is suspicious something is going on between them, but they convince him otherwise and they both keep their jobs.

Ross finds out that Phoebe has never had a bike so he buys her very first bike, which is pink and very pretty, and then he teaches her to ride it. It doesn't go smoothly and he has to buy her training wheels.

Tropes:

  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Phoebe, when she talks about how she never had a bike as a child, while the girl across the street had a great one:
Monica: Did the girl ever let you ride it?
Phoebe: No! But she gave me the box that it came in. It had a picture of the bike on the front. So I would sit on it and my step-dad would drag me around the backyard.
      Ross: That is so unfair!
Phoebe: Not really, I got to drag him around too!
    • After Chandler calls out all of the neighbors for not even bothering to learn Monica's name, Joey, who's part of the mob, asks him if he can get more candy since he does know her name.
  • Desk Sweep of Passion:
    • Rachel dramatically sweeps all the stuff off her desk and hops up onto it in front of her boyfriend (and her assistant) Tag.
      Tag: Are you serious?
Rachel: No, I’ve just always wanted to do that. Can you help me clean this up?
    • Tag, flirting with Rachel, sweeps stuff from Rachel's desk and wants to get it on. Rachel glares at him and says it took her so long to get that desk organized... but it turns out she's just messing with him and is into playful flirting. She just wants to see his ass as he tries to pick up the things from the floor.
  • Freudian Excuse: Chandler asks if Monica became a chef so that people would like her. It would be in line with her history as The Un-Favorite.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Chandler shames the crowd and tells them to leave, Joey (who was all in on pestering Monica for more candy) denounces them for their behavior.
  • Learning to Ride a Bike: Phoebe never had a bike growing up, so Ross gives her one as a gift. He then has to teach her how to ride it, but she freaks out when he lets her go and falls. In the end, she manages to ride it... with training wheels.
  • Poor Man's Porn: Joey claims he used to draw pornographic sketches before he could afford to buy porn.
  • Right Through the Wall: Joey and Chandler recognise one woman who shows up asking for candy by her voice because she lives in the unit below Joey and "has sex really loud".
Woman: Yes! Yes! Please, just give it to me!
Chandler and Joey: Yeah, that's her.
  • Shaming the Mob: Chandler eventually gets fed up with the crowd of people harrassing Monica for her candy and shames them into going away, pointing out that she started this to try and get to know them and yet none of the mob even knows her name.
  • Shutting Up Now: Joey openly laughs at Monica's Armor-Piercing Question, until he sees Chandler glaring at him.
  • Sleeping with the Boss: Rachel and Tag have some problems with their Office Romance. Rachel is supposed to evaluate Tag and she fills one as a joke for him. He sends it to Human Resources without reading it because it's marked confidential.
Rachel: So did you read your evaluation yet?
Tag: No! It was marked confidential I just sent it down to Human Resources.
Rachel: (worried) Okay please, you’re kidding right?! I wrote that one as a joke for you!
Tag: A joke they would appreciate?
    Rachel: I'm thinking no.
    Tag: What did you say?!
Rachel: Umm, I said I thought you were a good kisser, and uh, and that I like your teeny-tiny tushie.
  • Supreme Chef: Monica is a talented chef and excels at baking and making candy.
    Neighbour: Hi!
Monica: Hi. Do you know what time it is?
Neighbour: It's candy time! My roommate says that they taste like little drops of heaven.
Monica: Oh please! [to Chandler] Did you hear that? Little drops of heaven.
    Chandler: [laughing] 4:00 A.M.
  • Ungrateful Bastards: Chandler calls out the neighbors for being this, pointing out that they haven't even bothered to ask what Monica's name is even after she has worked herself to the bone to give them the candy they've been selfishly demanding.
  • With Friends Like These...: Among the crowd pestering Monica for more candy is Joey. He even slipped in an anonymous threatening note, which he blames on mob mentality.
  • Woken Up at an Ungodly Hour: A neighbor wakes up Monica and Chandler asking for candy at 4:00 AM. Chandler is less than pleased, while Monica is just happy that they like her candy that much.
