Tropes

  • All Women Love Shoes: Rachel excitedly shows Phoebe and Monica the new pair of shoes Paolo sent her from Italy. She wears them to Nana's funeral and is upset when she treads in mud.
  • The "Fun" in "Funeral": A downplayed version. Nana's funeral mostly goes off without a hitch until Ross falls into an open grave and hurts his back. He takes some painkillers and spends the wake high as a kite. Meanwhile Joey has snuck a portable TV in so he can check on a football game. Jack Geller catches him and half the men end up watching the game in the corner.
  • Gaydar: Lowell, who is gay, claims this is how he knew Chandler wasn't actually gay.
  • Generation Xerox: Based on one of the photos, Ross and Monica's grandmother had her own close circle of friends back in the day and a coffee hangout to go along with it.
Monica: [reading the description] "Me and the gang at Java Joe's."
Ross: Looks like a fun gang.
  • I "Uh" You, Too: While high on painkillers, Ross tells everyone how much he loves them. When he gets to Rachel and tells her “I love you most of all”, she plays along and says “and I wuv you most of all!” Ross gripes “You don’t get it!” And collapses on her lap.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Apparently Nana spent most of her time criticising everything Judy did, which is not all that different to how Judy now treats her own daughter.
  • Mistaken for Gay: One of Chandler's co-workers assumes he's gay and tries to set him up with another man in the office. This leads to a discussion about how he has "a quality" that makes most people think he's gay.
  • Not Quite Dead: There's a reason the episode is called "Nana Dies Twice". The nurse who responds to Monica's screams sheepishly claims "this almost never happens".
  • Oblivious to Their Own Description: At the wake Judy describes how Nana treated her but completely fails to realise she's treating Monica exactly the same way.
Judy: Do you know what it's like to grow up with someone who who is critical of every single thing you say?
    Monica: (Beat) I can imagine.
Judy: I'm telling you, it's a wonder your mother turned out to be the positive, life-affirming person that she is.
    Monica: That is a wonder.
  • Pet the Dog: In a rare moment of kindness, Judy compliments the earrings Monica wears to the funeral, possibly because they were Nana's earrings, which she gave to Judy, who passed them on to Monica.
