Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 6 E 9 Lou Wants To Be A Millionaire

Go To

Louis is selected to be a contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, but gets into an argument with Eddie during a break in filming. Jessica argues with Emery over the latter's dream to become an actor.

  • Brick Joke: At home with Evan, Grandma Huang thinks that Alistair Cain, the guy hosting a science questionnaire on television at the same time as the gameshow, is quite attractive, and sneaks in a call asking about if he's ever used his globe erotically. In The Tag, she gets a call back from Alistair, who is waiting for her outside with his globe.
  • Call-Back: At the start of the episode, when Louis is watching Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and dismisses the idea of ever being a contestant on it, Evan points out that Jessica and Honey were already on a game show.
  • Chekhov's Armoury: Louis is able to answer the questions in the initial few rounds just based on things he'd personally experienced over just the past few days, like knowing the boiling point of water due to Eddie attempting to recreate one of Grandma's recipes, or Trent interrupting an argument he was having with Eddie over his "fusion" cuisine by arriving with his arm in a sling and stating that he had lateral epicondylitis (AKA tennis elbow).
  • Child of Two Worlds: Eddie wants to contribute to Cattleman's Ranch with a "fusion" American-Asian menu item of his own creation. Louis initially refuses, until he's told by Regis (who overheard them arguing in the studio and was genuinely interested in the dish) that Eddie is himself a "fusion" that's just trying to honor both his cultural background and current homeland.
  • Commonality Connection: When Jessica and Emery leave the set for a snack break, they aren't allowed back in until the taping is over, and Emery suggests they "act" their way in; when Jessica refuses to debase herself, Emery manages to find a way to make acting sound appealing to her: using it to manipulate other people to get what you want.
  • Control Freak: Eddie uses those exact words to describe Louis during an argument over refusing to alter the Cattleman's menu to include his new "fusion" creation, even after Eddie's trial run of the product has been a great success and it's actually saving the business money by using meat scraps that would've just been thrown out.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Subverted; Jessica first explains her dislike of acting to Emery by stating it reminds her of how her father constantly lied to her mother about drinking and seeing other women, before revealing that she was just acting in order to get revenge at Emery for ditching her during the earlier sneak-in attempt and just hates the career because of how many people have tried and failed at it.
  • Game Show Appearance: The episode's main plot takes place on the set of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.
  • Gilligan Cut: When asked why he hasn't considered applying to be on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire despite loving the show, Louis goes into detail about how unlikely it would be to get picked out of thousands of applicants even after screening. Cut to Louis introducing himself to Regis Philbin and the gameshow's audience.
  • Idiot Ball: Louis briefly grasps it at the end of the main plot, when he uses his Phone-A-Friend to call Eddie (who's just in the audience) and apologize for refusing Eddie's menu item during the show, instead of calling Evan at home as the family had planned. Louis immediately gets the actual question wrong and loses all the money, with Evan calling him out for it in The Tag when the episode's being aired on television.
  • Insult Backfire: Jessica insults Emery's admiration of Regis Philbin and how long he's been on television by stating how being filmed is so easy even an animal can do it. Eddie then points out how the animals filmed in nature shows are depicted doing things like stalking prey for three straight nights, which takes a lot of effort.
  • It's All About Me: Emery and Jessica's attempt to sneak back into the set by acting like technical engineers almost fails because Jessica insists that she's his boss, refusing to treat him as a colleague of equal standing; hurt by her words, Emery manages to convince the guard that she's not with him.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: While the rest of the family is at the gameshow set, Evan is at home with multiple encyclopedias and trying his best to keep the phone lines clear, resisting temptation to call in to a science show and then accidentally mixing up the family phone with Honey and Marvin's identical phone (as Jessica bought them in a bundle) when he asks to make a call with theirs, and even turning down a call from a Warner Brothers producer calling to ask if Emery's available to audition for a role in the upcoming Harry Potter. It's all for naught because Lou wastes his call apologizing to Eddie on-air.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Louis and Eddie start arguing during a break, Regis encourages them to patch things up, and extends the break by an additional 90 seconds with an announcement that there's technical difficulties "that don't involve contestants and their sons".
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To Slumdog Millionaire, with Louis having a Chekhov's Armory of gameshow answers that's shown through flashbacks, and ultimately using his Phone-A-Friend to reach out to someone he loves rather than actually using it to get an answer... which, unlike the film, leads to Louis losing all the money.
