Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 6 E 6 Chestnut Gardens

Go To

Matthew Chestnut is back and wants to resume working with Louis, who is eager to rehire him. However, Eddie, Trent, and Jessica are all suspicious of Matthew's intent, the former two because Matthew is immediately assigned as head manager, and Jessica because Matthew's encouraging Louis to focus on the restaurant over his other passions. Meanwhile, Emery is alarmed by Marvin's outdated views on sexism, especially after Evan starts copying his vernacular, so they try to reeducate him.

  • Bait-and-Switch: After spending hours trying to reeducate Marvin's sexist views under the assumption that they're due to his age, it turns out he gets it from Honey, who repeatedly insults his manhood when he struggles to help her open a jar.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: In The Tag, when Eddie and Trent admit that Matthew's had some good ideas, they spot him handing out multiple German beer mugs and ask how he can hold them all at once; he replies that he gained the hand strength by "crawling out of your father's ass" and then has them perform an embarrassing dance in lederhosen as part of a promotional event.
  • The Bus Came Back: After leaving the series in "Where Have All the Cattlemen Gone?", Matthew Chestnut comes back to work with Louis, though Eddie and Trent worry he has ulterior motives for returning.
  • Deadly Euphemism: Jessica tells Louis that she's glad he put Grandma in charge of his old garden idea, because it will "get her used to dirt".
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: According to Evan, Marvin still refers to Germany as Prussia. Marvin's views on relationships are also seemingly outdated, but it's subverted with the reveal that he learned them from Honey.
  • The Ditherer: Jessica eventually realizes that Louis wasn't convinced to stop his latest plan of managing a garden because of Matthew's influence; he just has a bad habit of starting up projects and then not following through on them when the next big idea comes along.
  • Heel Realization: Marvin is initially dismissive of Emery's concerns about his sexism, until his baby daughter Maria repeats him saying "balls" and he realizes he's not being a good role model for his daughter.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: In order to test if Matthew's actually sincere about returning to Cattleman's or will leave if another big-name opportunity comes along, Jessica has Eddie and Trent pretend to look at resumes for the managerial position at a more upscale restaurant. It falls apart because the name Eddie comes up with for the exiting manager is the author of one of Jessica's university textbooks.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Thanks to Matthew's suggestions, Louis plans to serve German Beer at an American steakhouse (run by an Asian, Louis, and an Irishman, Matthew).
  • Offscreen Breakup: Just as Jessica learns that Matthew's returned and states that she genuinely looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Louis informs her that the Chestnuts have gotten divorced and only Matthew's back.
  • Shout-Out: Emery's recent concerns over sexism and feminism were sparked by reading the script of The Vagina Monologues.
  • Stock Lateral Thinking Puzzle: As part of Marvin's reeducation, he's given the riddle about "The Doctor's Son". He eventually decides it's because the son has two gay fathers, never once considering a woman might be involved even after both boys tell him the correct answer.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: When Marvin invites them on a fishing trip, Emery ends up repeatedly throwing up over the side of the boat (he's not seasick; he just can't stand Marvin's sexist language), but it cuts to Marvin and Evan every time.
  • Windmill Crusader: Emery immediately becomes devoted to fighting sexism after reading The Vagina Monologues. Evan calls him out for how high-and-mighty he's acting after having read a single script, only realizing he may have a point when Emery threatens to call Evan's girlfriend Sicily and tell her about what Evan and Marvin talked about while fishing. It then turns out that his efforts to correct Marvin's sexism was an imaginary struggle because he hadn't even considered that Honey, a woman, was the source of his sexist language, and Emery decides to reconsider his own biases.
  • Yes-Man: Despite having left without even saying goodbye in person, Matthew quickly becomes Louis' right-hand man again by constantly praising his abilities.
