Alison thinks her relationship with Eddie may have lost its spark. When Jessica gets called for jury duty, she campaigns to be the jury's leader. And Emery and Evan struggle to raise a digital pet.
- Bromance: Louis and Allison's dad, Greg, get along great because they're both William Shakespeare fans, even playing the Spin Doctors' "Two Princes" for their kids.
- Buffy Speak: Grandma calls penguins "panda birds".
- Cruel to Be Kind: Louis ends up breaking his friendship with Greg, because they've been made aware that Alison was becoming self-conscious about her relationship with Eddie not having the same "spark" as theirs.
- Irony: Romeo and Juliet is brought up a few times in the episode. But in Eddie's life, instead of their relatives feuding and getting drawn closer to his girlfriend, their fathers hitting it off drive him and Alison apart.
- Not Quite Dead: In The Tag, Emery and Evan decide to hold a funeral for their digital pet in the front yard, only for the buried device to start beeping. They both decide to claim they heard nothing and then run for it rather than unbury it.
- Obviously Evil: Jessica has this opinion about the man charged for arson in the court case she's part of, who does have a notably off-kilter look. Unfortunately, choosing to voice this opinion has the case deemed a mistrial.
- "Shaggy Dog" Story: After days of prolonged jury duty when everyone had already agreed on a Guilty verdict because Jessica wanted to be foreman, the case is a mistrial when Jessica can't help but voice her biases while declaring him guilty. It's even Shaggier in The Tag, when Honey tells Jessica she could've just avoided jury duty entirely by mentioning her Green Card, provoking Jessica to tears which Emery and Evan mistake as sympathy for their dead virtual pet.
- The Unpronouncable: Jessica gets hit with this during jury duty selection when they pronounce Huang as Hoo-wang.
- Virtual Pet: Emery and Evan get a Tamagotchi mailed out by their cousin in China. It begins to put a strain on their relationship as well as their sleep before it "dies".
